Old bikes & lights

Are LED fronts not allowed? I just got a new BuM DLumotec topal senso
plus, which is brilliant (and approved in Germany) - is that total
verboten in der U.K.?

Thanks to anm EU directive, lamps that are allowed in other EU
countries where the standard is equivalent are OK in the UK. Germany
is acknowledged to have a stricter standard than the UK so you're new
lamp should be OK on any bike.

My point really was about any light be allowed on old bikes, not
specifically the legality or not of LEDs. I'd be intersted to learn of
your experiences with the new lamp, it certainly looks good.

Ask again after the winter, but so far it has been excellent: seems at
least as bright as a regular 3W dynamo lamp (i.e, good for road use,
but wouldn't light-up a trail), stands out well even in daylight. The
stand-light LED is greatly improved, it starts off as bright as the
main LED, and holds its charge much longer.

I had the Oval senso+ before, which got broken when a car knocked the
(parked) bike over (180degree handlebar twist scenario), but this one
looks more solid. Only time will tell. Yeah, and it ain't cheap....

IIRC you can put any forward facing non flashing white lamp or non
flashing red lamp on a bike [1] (subject to a max power output?).

However, you MUST have a BS approved light front and rear [2] at night.

[1] Until Saturday when you can put a flashing lamp on.
[2] Until Saturday when flashing LED lamps brighter than four candela
yada yada are sufficient for legal compliance [3][4]
[3] Until then you can have flashing lights on your person. or a
flashing orange light mounted an appropriate distance from the ground.
[4] but due to an oversight/laziness, not steady LED ones.

Are we to assume you have 3 post October 1990 bikes and one older one?
I think the rules are [1] that the old bike can have lighting to the
pre-1990 spec, *or* lighting to the more modern spec. The newer bikes
have to conform to the newer rules.

You can (where do you get the carbide?) but the rear lamp still has to

I think the CTC handbook explains it all.

that's still allowed on older bikes.

If I put modern parts on my 1988 lugged steel frame is it still
"manufactured before October 1990"?
