I have not yet got BB, there is no cable to my house so NTL is a non starter for me anyway

I use pipex and am happy, If there has been any down time in the last 12 months I have not noticed
it. BT has some sort of bargain offer at the mo as well I think (free connection etc)

Works for me though I use the Uni Berlin servers for NG's -- they seem more robust.

I use my connection all day for work but less intensively in the evenings.

Generally OK though it does tend to slow down a bit in the evenings (when all the DOM are accessing
the [censored] sites??). Most of the time this is not a problem.

There is a nasty habit of 'dropping the connection' -- which seems normally to mean a reboot -- but
whether that is NTL or just the usual inadequacies of your favourite operating system (Win98 of that
ilk) I cannot say. This is not a major problem most of the time.

I suspect, as with most cable based systems YMMV depending on how many subscribers are connected to
any particular node.

As this is my first experience of broadband I have little (other than ISDN & dial up) to compare
with -- and compared with them its Luxury.

I'm with Ntl and have no complaints unless you are into Binary newsgroups. Ntl newsgroups are
notoriously bad but that is because they are notoriously over subscribed. Ntl now do a text only @
text.news.ntlworld.com and this is perfect. I am on the 500 setup which is up to 600 with no extra
charge. I think for the money (£25 p/w) it is a good deal.

Never had a single problem with *any* of their services. Also have the office connected with them
and again, no problems whatsoever.

I use Pipex. The Pipex connection is always on (I reset it less than my watch) and always good from
here. They charge me £19.95 + VAT a month, and I think they charge £14.95 for all the equipment you
need (USB ADSL modem etc.). I believe installation is free, but you would need to check that. They
were third fastest ADSL supplier last month according to www.adslguide.org. Their news server is a
bit shot at the moment, but I've been using the free one in Berlin (which you may have seen
mentioned here) until they get that fixed.

I would also recommend a router/firewall for two main reasons. 1. You can share the connection with
other PCs in the house (if you have any, that is) and 2. Things like the blaster worm and other
nasties have a much harder time infecting your machine. I built mine out of an old PC, but you can
get them off the shelf with ADSL modems built in too.

Other than that, they have no stupid restrictions like some other ISPs I could mention, and make
sure you have a comfortable chair to surf from.

We only had one problem really, a few months after we had it the connection kept randomly dropping,
reported this by phone at about 12pm, the engineer was round to look at the Set top box, connections

The 'ISP' side of things with NTL is a a little flaky -the news servers in a particular, also the
mail sometimes. Excpet for ntl.* groups, I use the 'Berlin server' I collect mail via pop3 from
other mails servers - mostly that sent to my own domain name., and post via NTL's

If you are moving ISP then I would suggest (if you haven't already) registering a domain name of
your own and then forwarding the emails on to NTL or another address you can collect from. Then if
you change again in the future your email addresses stay the same.

We are with NTL because :

1. We already had the phone and TV package, so the whole lot works out to a good price for us.

2. It was available before ADSL was for us.

If you're in an NTL area you won't be able to get blueyonder but it's OK - the only problems have
been with email (all too frequent of late) and
v.occasionally newsgroups but using their news-text server seems to get around that.

I'll second that. I just moved into a new house in York and fished around a while for service
providers. I went with Zen Internet and have been not only satisfied with their service, but totally
impressed with the help and options that they offer (multiple static IP addresses if you want them
etc). If it adds weight to this recommendation, I just graduated with a Masters degree in Computer
Science and am about to start a PhD in the subject. :o)

Thirded....and with Zen, you are on a month-by-month contract, so if something better comes along or

Also consider - if you go with NTL then you have no choice in the future. You can't change from NTL
to another broadband service and use the same hardware etc.....whereas with ADSL you have the choice
of many, many suppliers. Just don't go with BT.

And....hardware. Many with try and throw in a USB modem in with the package price. That's okay for
now maybe, but if you decide to change your operating system (maybe go Linux, maybe by a Mac),
you'll find that the modem may not work. Also - you plug the USB modem into one PC and that's the
one with internet access (unless you try and set up Internet Connection Sharing). On the other hand,
a modem/router plugs into the ADSL line and stay connected all the time, even when the PC is turned
off. It connects to the PC via ethernet (network), so it'll work on virtually any operating system,
and adding a small hub with say four ports, means you can connect the same modem to more than one PC
and they all share the internet access (as well as file sharing and printer sharing, etc).

For the small outlay (~50ukp for the modem/router and ~20 for the hub, ~10 for a network card in the
PC if it hasn't got one and ~7 for a cable), it's a better and more future proof option than the
"free" stuff the ISP will try and give you.

Yet another Yorkie!

I use timewarp internet - www.timewarp.co.uk. Good, cheap and give you a static IP address.

Combine this with a Netgear adsl base station/4 port switch/wireless base station all-in-one dodah
and you have one very happy camper.

Congrats, but I fear that ADSL is pretty much a consumer commidity these days 🙂

I use NTL broadband and I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I keep hearing people complaining
about it but all I can say is that I find it works okay. If there is one small gripe its that there
news server (for boards like this) is a bit slow. Therefore, simply subscribe to oner of the other
free ones on the web. I live in Lincoln but subscribe to a free news server in Berlin - no problems
whatsoever. Slim

I'm using Nildram here, I chose them because according to adslguide.org.ukadslguide.org.ukOpen ↗ they
consistently turn up at number one and I certainly don't have any complaints.

FWIW I run an ethernet modem as opposed to a USB modem (I can't help feeling that this is a misuse
of the USB port and that using a 'proper' network connection is better). Other reasons for running
an ethernet modem are that USB modem support under Linux can be a bit hit and miss.

I use the NTL 150k service 17.99 per month I think. Frees up the phone line and fast enough for what
I need - newgroups browsing occasional downloads of files. No problems with it. Iain C

I'd agree with that, Slim. As I subscribe to text based NGs only, text.news.ntlworld.com works
fine for me.

I've been with NTL for about 18 months and there has been only one e-mail outage in that time. It
lasted for a day and a half, and it was mentioned on ntl.announce before it ground to a halt.

FWIW, my TV and telephone come through a cable and I don't have a working BT line into my house. NTL
was the obvious choice when I decided I wanted BB. Bryan is correct, of course, when he says that
the options are somewhat limited (limited to none) if you desire a different ISP.

Also makes it much easier to run a small network of computers behind your ADSL connection.
