  1. HI

anyone any experience of stans no tube kits.

I just got some and am finding it very difficult to get my tires to seal. I'm using michelin dh
tires with mavic 521 rims. The tires don't seem to want to seal against the rim

Nope, I'm a genuine certified user of Oliver's Yes Tubes only. Accept no substitutions for
simplicity, ease of use and repair.

    -John Morgan

...put THAT on the testimonials page. =)

  4. Does the bead not initial seat? Or does the bead seat, but leaks air slowly.

If the bead is not seating, you will need a source of compressed air. (Gas station) If you have a
slow leak, it sometimes several days to seal.

I use the bmx tube method and it works great. No flats from thorns or pinches.

What am I supposed to be seeing. It actually looked fairly impressive. I watched all three videos
and the only thing that looked remotely like a problem was in the last video when it took about 1.5
seconds for a hole to seal. I am skeptical of no-tubes kits, but the vids make them look nice.

Hmm, I see that, but I guess no problems with the actual UST tire. Anyway, it would still make me
worry about being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat. I don't know much about tubeless tires
though, but it seems there are pluses and minuses. I need to try and track down a site that gives a
rundown on them. It sure would have been nice to have something like that when I got two thorn
punctures recently. Anyway, I guess there are other notube systems too? I'll just have to take a
look, but for now, I'm sticking with tubes. By the way, do you know the most common issue with
failure after the tires are installed? Is it leaks, or tire displacement or other?

Its not a case of wanting tubeless for the sake of it. I run UST tires anyway, the only punctures I
get are pinchflats and dh tubes weigh over a pound each which is even more when rotating, and i want
to try and save weight. Tubless seemes to be the way to go for me, less weight, no pinchflats =

    Yes.

If you are going tubeless, go UST.

Before you even consider buying the noTubes kits, take a 1/4 inch drill bit and see if it will fit
in your presta valve hole if it doesn't then you will need to drill it out. This is important to
seat the valve correctly. Quite a few people are not willing to drill out their expensive wheels.

If you still want to go for it here's a few tips for installation.

Use baby powder to help seat the rubber rim strip.

Spread soapy water on the tire sidewalls to help seat the tire.

The odds are you will not be able to hand pump the tire, either use a compressor or CO2 cartridges.

Once beaded, shake the tire to spread the sealant around, then pump to around 60 psi, (this will
open up more holes), shake tire to spread fluid, ride around the block then let sit over night (you
will lose pressure) repump to desired PSI.

After this is done you will still need to:

Check your air pressure before each ride (you will still lose air).

Run recommended tire pressure (there is a chance you can ruin your sidewalls by riding with low tire
pressure, then no matter what you do you will not be able to fill the millions of tiny leaks).

Carry a spare tube and air (you can still get flats, I had a friend running noTubes in a race and
split a sidewall, he had to walk the bike back)

I've run this system for a couple of months and had no problems, no flats. I'm ready to swap out the
rear tire because of wear and will be using noTubes on it. It can be a good system and it can be a
    nightmare.

I'm using non UST tires on regular rims.

I just got some and am finding it very difficult to get my tires to seal. I'm using michelin dh
tires with mavic 521 rims. The tires don't seem to want to seal against the rim

    AL

    Tried them and retired them.

I had problems sealing one set of tires, but they were cheap so I didn't hold it against Sam. I did
however need to use my air pig (air tank - no compressor - fill at local gas station) to get the
beads to catch the rim properly.

With another set of newish Panaracer tires, I scraped the sidewall fairly bad in some rocks. This
removed enough rubber that all the sealant and air blew out. Popped a tube in and the tire held for
the rest of the ride. The sidewall bruise was bad enough that the tire did get thrown away, but it
does show one weakness of the Stan's No-Tube; a tube would have held up fine.

On the third attempt in some older Hutchinson Rock-X-Air tires, I must have hit the tire hard enough
to break the seal at the rim. A lot of the air escaped but it seemed to be holding. Since it was a
race I thought I'd just keep riding, and see if it held. It didn't. Maybe with a tube this would
have been a pinch flat, but I really didn't think so.

I'm back to tubes. Simple and effective.

I did use this as an excuse to buy a compressor. I've wanted one for years. The copmpressor is
almost madatory to get the tires sealed. It's amazing how much easier the whole deal is when you can
shoot a ton of air into the tire quickly.
