nipple washers?

That might have been me. I use nipple washers under the nipples on rims without ferrules where I
know spoke tension will be high. It prevents pullout and fine cracks from developing around the
nipple holes. I see this happen a lot. I use aluminum washers with a 1/8" hole. I personally prefer
TRW pop-rivet washers. A box of a gajillion is about $5. Add 1mm to your spoke length calc.

I have never used nipple washers but I HAVE washed my nipples.

I'll leave it to others to say whether these are a good idea. But I do wonder why Sapim makes them
in steel. Wouldn't you want something softer so that the nipples would bed in?

No! He's talking about spoke washers that go between the spoke head and the hub flange. BTW, the
"new" long-elbow DT spokes (that were out a couple of years ago) have reverted back close to the
"old" design.
