Beginners can post their running logs here (or in the "Training Week"
thread if they prefer, or anywhere else, it's an unmoderated group). No
run too short. No pace too slow.
Here's mine:
On Saturday, my daughter was invited to a birthday party about 3 1/2
miles from our house, so after we dropped her off there my DH drove back
and I ran. It was downhill all the way so I wouldn't want to do it
often, but it's fun to run new routes, and it was a handy way to fit a
run into our day. Sunday's run was the longest I've done by a small
margin, but otherwise unremarkable. Monday I got up at 6:30am to run in
the dark and the cold and the driving rain and the howling wind. Not
fun. At 6:30am on Tuesday I opened my eyes and saw that the weather was
the same as Monday so I went back to sleep, but I did a hill program on
the treadmill at the gym later in the day. Treadmills aren't my
favourite but anything would be preferable to running in weather like
that. Wednesday I did a short and languorous run outside, and Thursday I
did my favourite circuit but clockwise instead of anticlockwise, because
that's the kind of crazy kid I am.
Also this week I entered a 5K race in Leeds in 2 weeks' time. My last
(and only other) 5K I ran 29:31, and I'd like to do better than that.
It's too late to do much in terms of training for this race, but I'm
running faster now in training than I was then, for the same perceived
effort. I think I'll have more luck my adjusting my tactics. I started
the other race really slow - too slow - and I finished with quite a bit
still in the tank. I don't want to make the opposite mistake and go out
too fast, but I think I can start quite a bit faster without blowing up.
I'll also try a little taper before the race. Last time I did a
speedwork session the day before the race (because I only decided to
enter on the spur of the moment) which probably left me a little tired.
How long should I taper for a 5K? A couple of days?
