  1. Greetings,

yesterday, while cycling home through rush hour London traffic, I had he pleasure of being
repeatedly honked by a car for daring to be cycling in an active bus lane that he had decided to
claim as his own. To make his presence further known, said car decided to hang about a foot off
my rear wheel as I went along. Obviously the 18 mph I was doing compared to the near static line
of traffic to our right wasn't enough for him. How dare I cycle legally whilst he contravenes
    the bus lane!

Imagine my joy when after several hundred yards of this I saw some police in front of me, who
pulled over the driver to my rear. I stopped long enough to hear an officer say to the driver "I've
stopped you for driving in a bus lane and I'm going to issue you a fixed penalty notice." Well, it
    gave me a giggle!

Excellent. The driver wasn't John Prescott by any chance? ;-)

Would have been worth mentioning to them what he had been doing before they stopped him. Never know
they might have done a bit more to educate him.

Excellent! I hope they took their time about it, and gave him a 'producer' as well! The more the
delay and inconvenience the more the lesson not to be so impatient where he shouldn't have been in

Shame. Only about 80 squid and no points. He's probably been doing it for ages and, after 'a
period of reflection' will judge his time is more important that the convenience of others and
    start doing it again.

Shame he wasn't done for intimidating behaviour (or some such).

My reaction to this would be to slow down (as, I beleive, the Highway Code advises). However, being
hit up the rear by a mad motorist even at 5mph could be fatal. Bit of a Catch 22, really. I know
that several years ago a cycle commuter was killed in exactly this way by a bus driver on
Westminster bridge. The killer got off due, I think, to lack of evidence of intent.

  10. They *all* do that, Sir. Find the driver's address and work out the temperature at which his face
    catches fire, that's my advice.

Nice one! Had I been in your place, however, I would have formally complained to the nice officers
that he had been harassing me by following dangerously close and aggressively sounding his horn.
Maybe you could have got some extra charges brought.

You may recall that a few months ago I was in a similar situation and was actually rammed three
times in an effort to get me to move over. The police eventually decided to take no action against
    that particular maniac.

Talking of fixed penalty notices I'd like to see a few handed out for the constant violations of the
mandatory cycle lane on the railway bridge about 100 yards from Twickenham police station.

Not by the thin blue line themselves?

No, but just about everyone else. The cycle lane is really a disguised traffic calming measure
designed to bring 2 lanes of traffic down to one. It is separated from the rest of the road by a
hatched area. When it was first put in motorists were shy of it, but then a bold few started using
it to jump the queue, and now just about everything uses it including buses and Post Office vans. It
gets so much motor traffic that it's almost worn out.

Just over the brow of the hill it changes to a truly bizarre set of cycle lanes. There is one on the
pavement and one between the two regular lanes. Then at the traffic lights there are a number of
really short lanes on the pavement, none of which a cyclist can actually get onto without riding
over a prohibited bit. Pavement cyclists consistently fail to touch any of these daft lanes, simply
riding between them and continuing along the pavement afterwards.

Now see what you've done. You've started me off on cycle lanes again.
    :-(

  16. ...and there when you don't need them. I get a nice run onto London Bridge this morning and discover
a Vauxhall Omega, apparently being driven under the influence of Clement Atlee[1]. Being of sound
mind and doing about 27 mph, I overtook it. Plod got upset, possibly because I was zooming into the
middle of their sudden and unsignalled "anti-terrorist exercise"[2] - all three lanes are suddenly
full of stripy vehicles and machine-gun toting geezers in flak jackets.

Note to the Aged William: please SIGNAL before parking your minibus in the middle of the A3. Grr!

    1 - 20 mph, straddling two lanes. 2 - or something
