  1. About 6 months ago, while working out in the gym, laying on
back and pushing a leg press, I felt a bit of an ache in the
muscle of my left butt (sorry, but I don't know what other
term to use). It was about 3ins away from the spine. I
attributed it to perhaps doing 1 set too many. The ache
actually turned to pain and spread to the thigh muscle and
    left knee.

I've since been doing lots of gentle leg stretching (no
weights) and short runs, take ibuprofen, rub Bengay on knee
and left butt, but the ache still persists though not as bad
as before. I've been told it might be a damaged nerve,
sciatia...whatever, might be arthritis, not to run anymore,
etc. I don't know what to believe. Warm packs actually bring
on more pain instead of helping. I have been to see a couple
of docs but they've told me it's probably stretched muscles.
    But 6 months! I'm female, 5'3", 48y.o. and 112lbs.

I have only done 5 marathons and would like to start
training for next year's Disney Marathon. Should I? Or
should I wait till the ache goes away? Advice will be
    greatly appreciated. Tks in advance

There was a time when a comment like this would earn you a
    slap in the face...

Kerry, 'earn' suggests the slap would be some sort of
reward, which I'm sure wasn't your intention. May I suggest
'...be dealt with by a slap...' as a replacement? I think
that conveys better our sense of disgust with Wobbot and his
continued exploration of the darker recesses of human
    existence.

What type of docs? Are they familiar with sports injuries?
Perhaps you're not doing the right stretches for your
issues. Some injuries need heat, some cold, some alternate.
Heat may improve blood flow, but it may accentuate swelling.
I'm not sure if Bengay helps healing or not (I've never seen
it in any treatment), and ibuprofen helps with swelling, but
shouldn't be taken long term. Are the stretches the right
ones? Do you need to allow some healing before you stretch?
    (I've found I do.)

    but they've told me it's

I'm not a doctor or medical person. Perhaps unusual but
probably not unheard of for something to take that long to
heal if not getting the right treatment. If it's shooting
pain down the leg, that sounds like what I've read as
symptoms of nerve problems, *but* it could just as easily be
other things. I've had some issues almost in same area (but
not lower than pelvic region), that are still niggling me
after 4-5 months (almost never during running and only on
roads, but usually bothers me between runs), but getting
better, once I figured out some things that worked for me.
    I'm 56 female.

If it's bad enough that you're asking a ng about the pain, I
would try to resolve the issue before embarking on major
training. But that's me. I've found taking care of things
first, helps in the long term. I have heard some people say
that if it doesn't bother you running and only between runs,
then go for it. I've also seen pain-free running and pain
occurring at other times as symptoms of particular injuries.

Trying to identify the cause is really helpful to get the
right treatment. It sounds like you've tried at least with
some medical professionals. If none of them are sports or
injury oriented, you might try another. Ask some local
    runners who they use.

Check the attached link, showing pictures of the biceps
femoris long head and gluteus maximus connections, which
both start at the hip and cross the knee, at least to the
untrained observer. So, you could overload or overstretch
your rear thigh muscles and get these symptoms, just as the
doctors said. Stretching unhealed muscles can interfere with
healing, especially static stretching without overcoming a
stretch reflex. It could also be aggravation of the sciatic
nerve, or tibial nerve, or ....

Was the knee pain at the lateral side as the pictures
    would suggest?

Pehaps you could get ART massage or other therapy to reduce
    load on the injured tissues?
