on back and pushing a leg press, I felt a bit of an ache
in the muscle of my left butt (sorry, but I don't know
what other term to use). It was about 3ins away from the
spine. I attributed it to perhaps doing 1 set too many.
The ache actually turned to pain and spread to the thigh
muscle and left knee.
I've since been doing lots of gentle leg stretching (no
weights) and short runs, take ibuprofen, rub Bengay on
knee and left butt, but the ache still persists though not
as bad as before. I've been told it might be a damaged
nerve, sciatia...whatever, might be arthritis, not to run
anymore, etc. I don't know what to believe. Warm packs
actually bring on more pain instead of helping. I have
been to see a couple of docs
What type of docs? Are they familiar with sports injuries?
Perhaps you're not doing the right stretches for your
issues. Some injuries need heat, some cold, some alternate.
Heat may improve blood flow, but it may accentuate swelling.
I'm not sure if Bengay helps healing or not (I've never seen
it in any treatment), and ibuprofen helps with swelling, but
shouldn't be taken long term. Are the stretches the right
ones? Do you need to allow some healing before you stretch?
(I've found I do.)
but they've told me it's

I'm not a doctor or medical person. Perhaps unusual but
probably not unheard of for something to take that long to
heal if not getting the right treatment. If it's shooting
pain down the leg, that sounds like what I've read as
symptoms of nerve problems, *but* it could just as easily be
other things. I've had some issues almost in same area (but
not lower than pelvic region), that are still niggling me
after 4-5 months (almost never during running and only on
roads, but usually bothers me between runs), but getting
better, once I figured out some things that worked for me.
I'm 56 female.

I have only done 5 marathons and would like to start
training for next year's Disney Marathon. Should I? Or
should I wait till the ache goes away? Advice will be
greatly appreciated.
If it's bad enough that you're asking a ng about the pain, I
would try to resolve the issue before embarking on major
training. But that's me. I've found taking care of things
first, helps in the long term. I have heard some people say
that if it doesn't bother you running and only between runs,
then go for it. I've also seen pain-free running and pain
occurring at other times as symptoms of particular injuries.
Trying to identify the cause is really helpful to get the
right treatment. It sounds like you've tried at least with
some medical professionals. If none of them are sports or
injury oriented, you might try another. Ask some local
runners who they use.
