And for me, maybe 60% of my menus get made. The rest of the ingredients
get rearranged into other dishes, or put off til next week with
ingredients filled in when I shop next. But it gives me a starting
point, and when I come home from work tired, I can think a little
    less!!!

    Right. Exactly.

    Yes, I use a list.

are there really people who go grocery shopping without lists of any kind?

    Yes... ;-)

When I go in for one item that I know I need.

It's rare that I don't come out with FAR more than I went in for! <lol>
Especially if it's early and I'm hungry.

It's a very bad idea to shop hungry!!!!!!

I do use lists when I have a number of items to remember.
But I always end up with additions.

Well, heck! I didn't go overboard and say normal, I just wanted to let you
    know there are a couple more of us around ;o}

    I think it's a helluva good idea...

:-) Sometimes, when I want to be decadent, I go hungry on purpose. I get such yummy stuff that way. ;-)

    LOL. I love that idea.

How many do this in advance?

I plan loosely, in my head, sort of like, "Monday-whole chicken,
    Tuesday-pork chops, Wednesday-salmon, Thursday-hamburger,
    Friday-chicken breasts, Saturday-eat out, Sunday-beef roast. But I
don't plan a whole menu in advance.

I do much of my shopping for meat and staples that won't go bad at
CostCo, then do a stop at the regular supermarket for fresh stuff and
things I don't need huge amounts of at once. I have a generic list in
a Word document containing stuff I buy nearly every shopping trip. I
bring that up and add to it as needed, print off and bring with
me...but I don't really look at it much and go grocery shopping fairly
regularly without my list at all.

Oh, sure. . .so do I, but it's been probably 8 years since I left the store
and got in the car or halfway home and realized that I forgot the most
important needed item. Hate that when it happens. A computer list may be
more difficult if the computer isn't located near the kitchen and nearly
    always on.

I print it my list and keep it in the kitchen> Then I mark the things I
actually want to buy in a particular week.

    I know what you mean!
That is when I do make a list, when I know there is something I really
need. We have a dry erase board stuck with magnets to the refrigerator,
    then work off of that.

I may preplan ONE meal based on a cookbook or magazine per month, not
week. Most of the time I cook by the seat of my pants. I buy what
appeals to me and cook what I want to put together when it's time to
make a meal. What appeals to me on Monday most likely won't even be
on the radar screen by Thursday.

More or less the same here. More often than not, however, I'll get a
hankering for something during the day at work, grab the ingredients I
don't have at home and pick them up after work. Some Sundays, when the
mood strikes, I'll stroll through Epicurious, my cooking software, a
couple of cookbooks, looking for inspiration from the same old, same
old. And some days, I just slide by the gourmet take-out place in
Laguna Beach and see what looks good.

Uh, erm, yes. Sometimes, in addition to my previously admitted sloppy
planning habits, I wander the market for inspiration to see what looks
particularly good for dinner that night or weekend. You'd be surprised
how the sight of a well priced brisket or beautifully shaped eggplant
    can inspire!

Depends; if we're doing the "restock the pantry, 'cause
by Gawd, we're outta EVERYTHING!" sort of shopping run,
then a list is a must. But quite often, I'll go into the grocery
with no clearer plan than to find SOMETHING to put
    together for dinner that night.

The latter mode is also very common when visiting the
local Whole Paycheck market, since those sorts of trips
are more often than not "let's just go and see what they've
    got that looks good" sorts.

Me too. I have my list arranged according to the stores where I generally
    get the item.

I keep meaning to do that, but the one time I DID manage to get
such a list made - all the staples, all neatly sorted and ordered
by location in the store - but I got it done two weeks my
favorite store decided to start a major remodel!

Ditto. What did we do before dry-erase boards, by the way?
I forget..they're just SO darn convenient for everything.

I go there maybe twice a year, and tonight was the night. I wanted
cauliflower curry, and Berkeley Bowl doesn't stay open past 8pm (it
was 8:40, and Whole Foods stays open until 10). I got cauliflower,
curry paste, an onion (wow -- 99 cents a pound at the cheapest! I get
onions for 29 cents a pound at the Berkeley Bowl. I was afraid to even
look and see how much I paid for the cauliflower.), some Israeli
couscous, some soy yogurt, some red lentils, some gardenburgers, some
kipper snacks for James, soymilk, and, gosh, a tenth thing, but I
can't remember what (I put back a packet of yeast so I could go
    through the ten-items-or-less aisle).

serene, who went in there for cauliflower and curry paste, and ended
    up spening around $25
