Lower gear on the cheap?

  1. Hi there. Once upon a time bicycles for the road came with 42 and 52
    teeth chain rings and the smallest rear cog was 14 teeth giving a high
    gear of 100.3 inches. This high gear was quite sufficient for a great
    many riders.

    I find that I do not need any bigger of a gear than that 100.3 inches.
    I could really use a lowest gear that is smaller than my 30 teeth
    chain ring and 26 teeth rear sprocket which gives a low gear of 31.2
    inches.

    I have a Veloce triple crank with 30 -42 and 52 teeth chain rings. The
    small cog on the rear wheel is 11 teeth which gives me a high gear of
    127.6 inches.

    I am thinking of removing the 52 teeth ring and moving the 42 and 30
    teeth rings outboard one position. I am thinking about buying a 24
    teeth inner chain ring to fit my Veloce crank which will give me a low
    gear of 24.9 inches. My high gear would be 103.1 inches which is just
    slightly bigger than the 52 - 14 inches gear and it is also almost
    midway between the 52 - 15 and 52 - 13 combinations I have now.

    well as shifting up?

    If this would work the only cost would be the new inner chainring.

    feasibility of this conversion. I want to keep as much Campy stuff on
    this bike as I can.

  2. On a 135mm BCD Campagnolo crank the smallest chainring you can fit in the
    position currently occupied by your 42 is a 39, so what you want to do can't
    be done without changing the crank and chainrings. The cheapest change would
    be to try replacing your existing 30 cog with a 24 without any other
    changes.

    You can get Campagnolo cassettes with a 13t large cog, but in 9-speed they
    don't go any lower than 26t or in 10-speed 29t.

    OOPS and DRAT!

    I completely forgot that the BCD of the 30 was smaller than that of
    the other two ring positions. So much for that Idea. :<(

  5. I have a 17 inch gear, 34 on back 24 on front. A 22 front is now
    easily available to get even lower, I can climb most any hill even
    with my Yorkie on back groceries, books etc.

    Cannot put the 30t on the middle position, It is 135mm BCD, smallest
    ring there is a 39t. If ya really want that type of gearing, need a
    smaller BCD triple crank but even with a 94mm, still cannot put a 30t
    in the middle. 42/32/24 is possible tho.

    I recommend a smaller small ring, like 24t and a bigger range cogset
    in the rear, with a long cage Campag RD.

    Umm, that won't work. Only the 52 and 42 of your current set-up will
    fits the outer circle of bolts. The inner one uses a smaller circle.

    Instead of doing that, get a mountain-bike crank. That's what I did,
    and it works just fine. The front derailleur will shift it fine; yes,
    it's be better if the cage were shaped more like the 42-or-so toothed
    outer ring, but I've been using this for years.

    You will probably also need a new bottom bracket, but if you shop around
    this won't set you back much.

    Campagnolo 9 speed cassettes come in 14-28 too.
    14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25-28. Better spacing than the 13-28 with
    13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-28. Or get a 13-26 9 speed and replace the 26
    cog with a 28 cog from a shop that sells Campagnolo. Good cog spacing
    with 13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23 and then the bailout gear of 28 on the
    end. QBP used to sell a 28 cog for Campagnolo 9 speed cassettes for
    just this purpose. The cog itself was soft junk and wore very, very
    quickly.

    Then replace the 30 tooth inner ring with a 24 or 26 or 28 and his low
    gear should be low enough. If going to the 24 inner ring, then likely
    will need a long cage rear derailleur instead of medium cage to take
    up the extra chain slack. 26 inner ring will work with a 52 outer
    ring and medium cage.

    94mm bcd cranks do take a 30 tooth ring. I have a 30 tooth TA
    chianring in 94mm bcd that works just fine on my Race Face Turbine LP
    crankset. It is a 5 botl spider triple with 94mm bcd on the outer
    rigns and 58mm on the inner ring. I'm using it as a micro compact
    double crankset. Only using the 94mm bcd outer positions and a 103mm
    square taper bottom bracket to get the chainline in close.

    TA sells 94mm bcd rings in 2 tooth jumps from 50 to 30 teeth.

    And I recall the QBP catalog in 2000 listing Ritchey rings in 28 and
    29 tooth that fit onto the 94mm bcd crank too. They were steel
    rings. And I suspect there was very, very little extra material
    around the bolts.

    I've got the 28t. It came with special small-diameter bolts with spacers to
    gain the necessary clearance. There isn't much extra meat there, but again,
    it works.

    As others have noted, you can't put the 30 in the middle.

    Here's a cheap solution: Change the inner ring to a 26T. Not quite as
    low as the 24, but it still shifts tolerably with a Campy triple FD
    (26-42-52), though a little rough going 26 -> 42.

    If your rear derailleur's long enough, go with the 28 in the back.

    An elegant solution, but more $$: change all the rings 26-40-50 (Campy
    makes 40/50, though they aren't seen in most shops; other mfrs make them
    also). Shifts wonderfully. I've been using this for a few years now.
    With a 13 in back, that's higher than your 100.3 (I have a 12; I like to
    pedal on downhills).

    The TA Cyclotouriste and Stronglight mod.99 can take 30T rings in the
    middle position -- if you can find them. :-(

    The problem with that is the cost of the three new rings is as much as
    an entire new crankset. When I ordered the crankset I wanted 40 and 50
    teeth rings. What that would have entailed was me paying for those two

    Very nice. You can not get either a 22 front or a 32 or 34 rear that
    will fit a Campy crankset or hub respectively.

    I now wish I had built this up this bicycle with Shimano components
    except for the rear derailleur and the Brifters. There would have been
    many more choices available as well as availability. I will not make
    that mistake again.

    made for less than very frequent, hardcore riders - unless the 52t
    only goes along for the ride, and the cassete has really light/large
    sprockets.

    an entire new crankset. When I ordered the crankset I wanted 40 and 50
    teeth rings. What that would have entailed was me paying for those two

    There have been many good solutions given in this thread for getting
    much lower gears on your bike. Easiest is to buy a 24 tooth inner
    chainring and replace the 30. Presuming you have a long cage rear
    derailleur, instead of the medium cage rear derailleur, it will work
    just fine. Why are you so dead set against the 24 inner ring? Why do
    you insist on keeping the 30 ring?

    14-28 9 speed Campagnolo Veloce cassettes are available. 13-29 10
    speed Campagnolo cassettes are available. 24 inner ring and 28 or 29
    rear cog gets you a low gear around 23". Low enough for everything
    except loaded touring in the mountains.

    New 24 tooth inner ring is $10. New 14-28 Veloce 9 speed cassette is
    $60 full retail price. If you need a long cage rear derailleur then
    that will be extra of course. But if you could sell/trade the medium
    cage you have now, that would help.

    I got two cranksets I have confused.

    Actually I do not care if the middle ring is 30 teeth.

    However I did want to do this change inexpensively. Money is very
    tight for me.

    I think that if I do decide to go for lower gears on this bike I will
    be do it simply by swapping out the whole crankset since I do have a
    bb with an apropriate length spindle.

    As it stands to get the gearing I want using my Veloce cranks it
    looks like I need a new inner chainring $40Cdn (not the $10 you
    quoted)and a new Veloce long cage rear derailleur $150Cdn (to replace
    the medium one I have in order to handle the chain wrap of a 24-52
    crankset = 28 teeth difference). Will a Veloce long cage even handle
    that difference if used with a 26 teeth rear cassette? There is no
    point in paying $60Cdn for a new cassette that will only have 2 more
    teeth on the biggest cog. I have a number of extra links for my Veloce
    chain if I were to need them.

    The cost of the above changes is $190Cdn. To me this is a ridiculous
    amount to have to spend to get the gears I want. Instead I will buy
    either a road crankset with 24-38-48 teeth (24 teeth difference) or an
    mtb crankset with 22-32-44 teeth (22 teeth difference) because the
    current difference is 22 teeth. Either of those two items can be had
    locally for about $100Cdn and will work with my existing medium cage
    derailleur and my 26 teeth low gear cassette.

    Yes selling the old parts would help but I would still be out of
    pocket for the $240 until the used parts sold. I do not have a credit
    card as I never needed one. However you do need one in order to sell
    on Ebay so that is not an option.

    This is my first and only bike with all Campy components. It was and
    is my dream bike and I absolutely love the feel of the ride it
    delivers. I had hoped to keep it all Campy.

    Another problem is that where I am any thing Campy *HAS* to be
    *SPECIAL ORDERED* since none of the shops here stock Campy. This
    concerns me too because if I was touring and were to total my rear
    wheel I would only be able to get a Shimano hub wheel on a walk in
    trip to a shop. What I was trying to say was that it is too bad that
    Campy did not make a touring cassette with a low gear of say 32 teeth.
    It is my opinion that Campy could get a much larger share of the
    recreational/touring market if they only offered a touring crankset
    and cassette.

    Campy did make MTB grupos but they backed out of that market in 1996. They
    still make long arm rear derailleurs, triple crankets and triple front
    derailleurs which certainly qualify as touring components.
