Didn't know they'd opened one in/near Baltimore. I've been to the one in
Fairfax, VA and like it in some ways. Amazing produce department -- blows
away any supermarket I've been to, including Whole Foods. Very nice
cheese section, prepared foods, seafood, meat, deli.
My husband likes to buy porterhouse steaks there. $6.99/pound if you buy
more than one ($7.99/lb for one). They are delicious steaks.
The only downside for me is that it's so darn big. I shop with a
two-year-old, so I really can't go there with him. Even though they have
a really cool choo choo train suspended from the ceiling in the dairy
section. :-)

Chris, I have been bemoaning that the Asians/Latin "Global Market" in
Manassas, VA, over the last year has raised their prices on produce close to
100%, if not more, 80% of the produce is now totally unacceptable, whereas
it was terrific in the past (other store is in Woodbridge, VA - way too far
to travel). We swore we wouldn't go in there again. But yesterday we went
to stock up on wine about a block away and we broke our promise, and went in
to buy our stock of coconut milk. We bought a couple of bits of produce,
too, that wasn't just absolutely too terrible.
On our way to Fairfax, we stopped at Centerville to see if we could find
where Trader Joe's might be coming to in November and we went into a large
shopping area looking. We came across a dumpy looking store, called "Grand
Market" across from the Centerville library (where I stock up on my
cookbooks to explore) and DH said we should go into the store and look
around. It was huge. Well! A new find (even tho it's been there 3 years
+/-). Back to great produce, great selection (not of the Wegman's type)
great price of everything in the Asian line (there is even a little lunch
area where we had some sort of unnamable Korean lunch.)
Needless to say, we didn't make it to Whole Foods, Vienna, we had a fully
loaded car; and had to save room for our BJ's stop. It's terrible to get
stuck in a rut going to one store and settling on their dumpster-type
(Asian) produce because you don't know where else to go. There are some
more Asian grocers further east towards D.C., but Fairfax is just about as
far as we want to go (about 75 + miles for us one way).
The first thing I eye-spied was some Indian bitter melon -- looked quite
different than other bitter melon. Beautiful looking. There was an Indian
gentlemen, kindly face, we asked him how to cook it. What a delightful
person he was. I've got so much produce today, I've got to write it all
down and figure out how to use what first.
Also went to Cost Plus/Whole ? (still can't get that name down pat) looking
for canned San Maranzo tomatoes; no cans of tomatoes on shelf.
I found some Lintz chocolate that a poster said was so good, both in
chocolate bars, one saying 70% and one saying 85%. I had bought the
Valhrona previously at $3.79 a bar (equiv size) and these were $2.29 a bar.
Darn, I should've bought another Valhrona to do a taste test. But the 70%
IS quite tasty. I would've not bought a Lintz chocolate bar without the
poster's praise. Thank you.
I found an unusual block of tea, sort of inscribed (bas relief) decoration
on both sides (simple on back), perhaps 6x8, perhaps larger, made in China,
in a wooden box. It said on the back of the box that most people varnish
this and hang it for decoration. It is something I've not seen before. I
had to have it, of course.
I picked up at BJ's a roaster that was not Rival (their other choice at
$39.95), but a brand I've seen BJ's and Costco carry lately. It was $29.95
and I liked it better than the Rival. 6qt. oblong. 2 settings, which I
prefer, and another one for warm. The inside was black ceramic.
OT: Got the Roomba vacuum cleaner -- DH gave in to dear wifey. First he
said, NO, but when I said, I want to stop off at Best Buy, he said, "I'll go
back and get the Roomba." This will be a real kick for me.
End of "my day in town." Recooping, but fondly thinking about yesterday.
