It's 30 years since Led Zeppelin released Physical Graffiti and
invented heavy rock as we know it. Here's the inside story of how
they did it. Q mag talks about it and how Zep is THE best band of
all time and how they are more relevant now more than ever.
Jim
It must have been close to forty years since I heard them for the first
time. They were the warm-up band in a concert with Country Joe & the Fish in
Stockholm. The year must have been maybe 67 or 68. They were totally unknown
at this time but they made Country Joe sound like the warm down band instead
😉
I'm pretty sure Page was still with the Yardbirds in 67.
He also did a collaberation recording with Screaming Lord Sutch and
Friends which was total [censored].
Saw Zeps first stateside concert NYC Academy of Music (or Fillmore
East?) They it was billed as The new heavy metal sound. They opened
for of all Groups "Iron Butterfly" (heavy metal get it) believe it was
fall of 68.
You could barely see his body, but I swear you could see his Tonsils
in the middle of that head of hair, and when he wailed
BAAAYY...BBBAAYYY,,,,BAAAYY...BBBAAYYY and the guitar answered back
Ah What a "Far F"ing Out Show<BG>😉
I was hilarious! after everyone was absolutely amazed at these wailing
skinny English electric speed freaks with voice and guitar like
nothing they had ever experienced.
Then on stage comes the Sears/mod American Iron Butterfly, with clunky
Peace symbols, Polka dots, voice synth and "Ina Goda Diveda"
Everyone actually screamed for them to bring back Zep
I'm feeling my age because a similar thing that happened the first
time I saw or even heard of Hendrix. He was actually opening for "The
Monkees" in NYC Central Park Walman rink (I worked there at the time,
got backstage and got to get snubbed by Hendrix,)
Noel said "he's not normally like that man, give him a few minutes
by himself"
He went into his tent and I believe "he kissed the sky"
No surprise he still didn't talk to the likes of me <VBG>😉
Sorry bout that "ya drug it out of me" or I'm just sharing a big
offtopic flashback <VBG>
Them was the days
