  1. Can anyone suggest a decent online store that can supply Romney's Kendal
Mint Cake? I used to buy it from Peggler's in Arundel but they've gone
over to selling Quiggins, which is far inferior stuff :-( I know I bought
some in Cornwall last year, but it's a long way to go for a supply!

    Thanks,

    Andrew

funilly enough I used to buy it for the shop I ran in Blairgowrie from
Martex cash and carry. If you can use a 48 bar outer you could try there

That would be very convenient. My kids simply assume that I've got
Kendal mint in my bag when I get home after a walk, but I often
forget, or don't pass anywhere that sells it. I could order online on
the mobile and have it delivered next morning, so when they wake up,
    there it is!!
Or I could just get organised and buy a bulk supply. But then they'd
    find it and eat it.

If you can keep your head when all around are losing theirs...
then you've failed to grasp some important aspect of the
    situation.

Whatever it says on the liable, Kendal Mint Cake is almost pure sugar, so
should last for *years* if kept dry. Buy a *lot* when you find it.

No doubt this has been covered before, but (nice as it is) I thought Kendal
Mint Cake had gone out of favour as a 'trail food'.

Something about a sugar rush followed by an energy drop; same for Mars Bars
    et al.

Aren't you supposed to carry slow release foods such as malt loaf (which
ISTR performed better in tests than all the fancy sports bars etc.)?

Then again, if it is just an addiction....:-)

    Cheers
    Dave R

P.S. any reason why you couldn't make your own with sugar, a bit of
    glycerine, and some peppermint essence?

Sadly the only mint cake maker that has got it's act together with selling
over the web is Quiggins, where you can buy by the box at excellent value.
All other makers point you who they supply. I perfer Romney's as well

    Urgh.

That was my reaction when a woman friend of M****'s came on a Malham
walk with us, and bought some in the shoppe there.
She gave me a piece of it, even though I sneered at it, and then I
sneaked back in the shoppe and bought myself a bar. I didn't share
    it.....
Thirty years or so since I tasted it has either changed the taste of the
bars or my taste preferences. You can get chocolate flavour.....

Mmm, sugar rush... I find it great if you're on a long distance walk
and have to get over a hill. The sugar rush gets you up the hill,
then you can just roll down the other side during the energy drop. It
certainly helped me on the Dorset stretch of the SWCP, which goes
steeply up and down at regular intervals. Has to be plain chocolate
    coated though.

I wonder though - are after eight mints like "mini" Kendall Mint
Cakes? Could you just keep taking after 8's every few miles to keep
your energy topped up, rather than the one big energy rush of kendall
mint cake? I wouldn't fancy the hunt through the packet for the last
after 8 when I was tired at the end of a days walk though - it's bad
    enough normally!

Supposedly, yes. My personal fave is Asda's "extra special" plain
chocolate, fruit & nut mix, which has nice stuff like orange flavoured
cranberries(???) and walnuts in. A little bit of luxury when you're
    feeling shattered!

Yeah, I can't be bothered. I'd rather eat it than make it! You'd
definitely need to coat it in chocolate anyway - it's not nearly as
    good otherwise!

I know this is what is generally said happens but I don't find my energy
levels fluctuate at all when hillwalking, whatever or whenever I eat. Am I
just odd? Does everyone else get ups and downs from sugar? Just curious.
