Birthday and Christmas being so close. A week apart, B day today. I put 3 kids bikes together allready and they aren't even my kids. As for me got some cash for my birthday. So I made an order, Sram 9. halfpipe shifters,Sram X.9 rear derailleur, Avid mech disc brakes front and rear. I've got the disc wheels. Hopefully the order will be here before Xmas.

Do a Google search on those atrocities on this NG, Fred. Chris G had a mishap with them and suffered a broken wrist IIRC. Cancel that [censored] and get some [censored] pods instead.

Is there something wrong with the 9.0's ? What about the X9's ? I'm not going to get any non- gripshifters anymore, but I'll pay extra for the X.0's if there's any point besides weight- saving. I'm hopefully getting a new bike in about three months time, but it comes with Deore shifters so I'll have to swap them and the rear der. I was thinking about X.9 shifters and rear der. just like the OP.

Go with the attack shifters rather than the half pipes.

I just put XO shifters with X9 rear mech on my Orange. The shifting is faultless and the mech has already taken a few whacks with no problems. The "tornado" pattern on the XO is more positive gripwise.

Fred has been a regular here for quite some time now, though most of what he posts is pretty far out. If I told him to do a Google search, what the hell makes you think I'm going to hold your damn hand when you are a newb here?

I did do a Google search, on SRAM,Chris, wrist, broke* and several combinations thereof without any results except your original post.

I definately see your point. I though the term "halfpipe" referred to the short ones but I see now they don't. Didn't even know the long ones existed anymore as they're not available on any local web- shops nor can I remember seeing them on SRAM's web-site. The X.9 shortys (tinyurl.com2p8n6=Open ↗) is what I want (currently running Centera/5.0).
BTW, what's up with SRAM's web-site ? I haven't been able to get in for days now, is it just me ?

What about the X.9's? What is SRAM think about with those things? I've had mine for a bout a month and they have never been right ... Tighten down the mounting bolt and you can't get them to twist ... loosen them up and they twist all over the place, but still won't shift. And what's with the funky pointy things sticking out? Sure they give you plenty of leverage to twist with, but I keep getting my fingers stuck. Someone told me you're supposed to shift with your thumb ... but how can you twist it with just your thumb.

Actually, the X.9's are really nice. No problems so far.

I don't know what he's talking about but with the Half Pipe shifters the little 2" grip on the end pulls off the bar very easily unless you wire both ends. I found myself "grabbing air" with those shifters at least once. They are good if you are an XC racer on a variable course who likes a steady cadence that requires many up and down shifts per minute. I'm not sure if SRAM is even making them for 2004.

Well they are tainted by Rock Shox now you know, so the web server might have broken in two or a rhinoceros may have sliped between the staution

Good one 🙂
I think I'll avoid the ones with pointy things sticking out though 🙂

Try it again, but this time use the key words you were given. "Pretty, Far, Out".
