To enable it (assuming you use Sun Jave and IE) go to go to Tools ==>
Internet Options ==> Advanced. Click on the side bar to go down 2
more pages worth and you'll see a coffee cup with Use Jave. Make sure
that's checked.
If you don't yet have Sun Java go to http://java.sun.com/. Onthe
right side under popular downloads, click the first entry "J2SE5.0".
This is actually version 1.5.0. Follow the instructions, then if it
doesn't work, try the first part (above) to make sure it's enabled.

Did all that and still I get a blank page with a box and a little red x
indicating a graphic won't download.

So I guess it is no chatting for me. mIRC won't work either, I tried
that several months ago and can't connect.

Here's what you need to do to set up mIRC:
Download it at www.mirc.com
Install and open the program
Click second box from the top left (Options)
Click "Connect"
Click "Add"
Description: Vexnet (or RFC if that's easier to remember)
IRC Server: irc.penguinpowered.ca
Port: 6667
Click "Add"
Get Vexnet (or RFC) in the larger drop-down window
Click "Connect to IRC Server"

When you get onto the server, type:
/join #rec.food.cooking

To go automatically into the rfc channel in the future, go back to the
Options button,
Click on "IRC"
Click on "Perform"
Check box to perform on connect, then type in:
/join #rec.food.cooking
Click on "OK" and you're set!

I'm running version 5.82, so I'm not sure if this is accurate for earlier
or later versions.

had too many problems with it in the past...no chat for me it seems.

There's a minor glitch (and I have the same problem), Sandi... so keep
trying. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Try around dinner
time - if you're on the mainland. What time zone are you in?

I have already searched java applets and I come up with pages that have
literally HUNDREDS of applets on them. I have no clue as to which one
if any of them needs to be downloaded.

Sandi, what browser are you using? You can change the preferences to
allow java. If using Mozilla go to preferences/advanced/scripts &
plug-ins and then check "enable java scipt for navigator". Netscape
should be very similar to Mozilla. Quite often java is turned off in IE
because of security risks in Windows environment. If you are using IE
go to explorer/preferences/java and check "enable java". If using
Safari, go to preferences and check under web content to include java,
plug-ins and java script.

server origin -and it specifically states that it was blocked because
of server origin.

My area of Honduras has only dial up - no such thing as cable modem or
DSL where I am located.

I've tried unblocking the ports when trying to use the web based chat
or the mIRC...same thing....access denied. That was on the old
computer. I tried the same thing on this new computer with the same
results - access denied.

It is enabled. Everything that everyone has suggested has been doen
with the result of a blank page or access denied.

Sorry, I missed that it gave you the specific reason. Spam blocking,
blackhole or whatnot I assume. Not much to do about that.

bottom line with:

Crash can get into the channel that way, but I can't. Weird. Anyway, it's
