  1. Today is the 24th annivcersary of yours truly passing her driving test at the
first attempt. So I celebrated by going out for a ride on my bike :-)

This morning was *glorious*, so I said to Vernon that I was
going to pootle into Dereham as I had some odds & ends of
light shopping to do , and perhaps he may care to join me
as he hadn't been out on his bike for *months*... He took
    the hint :-)

To cut a very long story short, there's some roadworks going
on in town which combined with a not particularly
brilliantly thought out one-way system has resulted in
traffic chaos in town. The result is a lot of frustrated,
impatient motorists and frayed tempers. Put it this way -
it's quicker to cycle the five miles into my wee Norfolk
market town than it is to drive there and find a parking
place - traffic chaos rteigns and much debate is had in the
    local press.

As I said earlier, Vernon hasn't been out on his bike much
lately, so today was the first time he's experienced the joy
of permanent traffic jams throughout the day in Dereham. To
cut a long story short, we were waiting at a traffic light
on red. It turned to green and we set off, to turn right -
having signalled our intention to do so. Up the outside
comes a BMW Z-whatever, totally in the wrong lane and
totally having not seen us - driven by a blonde middle-aged
bimbo. The speed she was going was a demonstration of some
of the worst driving I've seen for a while. This was quickly
followed by twit in a Toyota Land Cruiser blaring his horn
repeatedly at the car behind us who was

all that about with that BMW & the 4-wheeler?" I had to
remind him that sadly, getting behind the wheel of a BMW or
a Toyota Land Cruiser immediately kills of the single brain-
cell of some who drive such machines and automatically
renders the driver immune to driving within the law and with
any form of courtesy for other road users. Sadly this lack
of courtesy seems to be becoming more and more the norm -
even in a little Norfolk market town and as I said to Vernon
    - it shows why you have to cycle assertively these days.

    Cheers, helen s

p.s. It was *glorious* to be able to cycle in a short-
sleeved jersey with armwarmers and just my shorts under
the leggings, instead of base-layer, jersey, waterproof
    (or wind-stop layer), shorts, long-johns + Bikesters...
thick socks.. etc., etc.. Spring is here :-)

Indeed it is, it's what the 2100 miles I've done since mid
October is for. Ready and fit for the warmer days already:-
) I know I'll get flamed but I love sailing past loads of
irate drivers as you described, it's funny isn't it?

Indeed, still windy up north but I am about to venture out.
Will be the first time in ages without overshoes and
    windproof jacket.

Up here in the North we are still saving up the money to be able to buy some good weather, but I'm looking forward to being able to get out on my "spring/autumn" bike instead of the winter beast with full mudguards and lighting paraphrenalia.

It's hard to beat cycling past a line of stationary traffic, but there's always some [censored] who sees you coming and pulls his car in closer to the pavement in a vain attempt to stop you getting past him! What sad funkers these people are - I make a special point of getting past them and then snotting on the road right in front of 'em 😄

The A28 into Canterbury regularly has traffic backed a long way due to roadworks in the town centre.

I got buzzed by a van on this road a week or two ago, then smiled quietly to myself as I passed him in the traffic three miles further up the road - and still a mile or so from the town centre. Very satisfying.

  6. It's normally a matter of principle *not* to let the knees
out before the start of the /outdoor/ racing season, but
that's not until late April this year, so I may have to
    compromise.

OTOH, if my particular position at the Nut Face is rendered
obsolete by the actions of the Evil Squirrels who run the
Nut Mines on Monday, perhaps not. Boycott the Thomson Group,
    everybody.

    Bah!

Being a boring old fart, I don 't condone bad cycling or bad
driving. But I do concede there's a bit of a significant
difference between a cyclist doing it and a large mass of
    metal *at speed*....

Even had a tailwind into town this morning! The Spring air
got to me and I sprinted up a hill, overtaking Vernon as I
did so. Got to the top and discovered my need for spped on
two wheels has been sated for the year. Back to pootling :-)

I was in Cambridge (well, Hinxton) for a couple of days a
few weeks ago. Cycling into Cambridge to get the train home
I was pootling along the A1301 (or whatever it is) and a car
hooted me. She wound the window down and shouted "use the
bike path" (to which I retorted "use the motorway"😉.

A few hundred yards further on I was turning right to head
up to the station and had passed her in the traffic,
waving merrily as I went past. I thought of stopping and
asking her to use a different road so she didn't hold up
all the cars but decided that irony would be lost on her
and I had a train to catch. Needless to say, even though I
had to wait another cycle at the lights, she still didn't
    catch up with me.

What I do is double bluff them. When I see them pulling
into the kerb, I shape up to overtake them on the outside
instead, which causes them to pull out into the middle of
the road to try and stop you. At the last minute you nip
past on the inside that they've just left clear.

Must give that a go 😉

Got to try cycling to work as well, it's a 46 mile round trip using motorways so it'll be a bit longer on the 'B' roads (assuming you can get to the Trafford Centre by bike). Maybe I'll have a lash during National Cycle Week - plenty of opportunity to be filled with righteous ire at the idocies of motorists then!

When I'm driving and I see a cyclist approaching from
behind, I do exactly what you've described, since by pulling
over closer to the pavement it allows the cyclist to more
easily overtake me on the "correct" side.

Did 20 miles sussing our part of the Trans Pennine Trail
near Wakefield. Not really enough time to do anymore by the
time I got out. The TPT is, well shall I say indifferent.
Part was a dirt track, part was a toepath which turned
really narrow, about 40cm wide, wall on one side, canal on
the other, stone flags not smooth tarmac, need a road
alternative for this part I think. T'other side was nice and
wide but I couldn't see the entry point from Stanley Ferry.
    Will do another reccy later

Who's the [censored]? You shouldn't be trying to pass on that
side - it's a violation of the Highway Code*, besides wich
    it is exceptionally dangerous.

It's hard enough for motorists to see you if you pass on the
outside, but it's even harder if you pass on the inside.
You're also running the risk of getting flattened when the
motorist suddenly decides to turn left without signalling.

Remember that the same rules apply to cyclists as to cars -
if there isn't room to pass on the correct side, you just
have to wait in line with everyone else.

    * Rule 138: "only overtake on the left if the vehicle in
front is signalling to turn right, and there is room to do
    so" highwaycode.gov.uk15.shtml (in case
you were under the impression that this doesn't apply to
cyclists, the "Rules for Cyclists" section of the Highway
Code states: "These rules are in addition to those in the
following sections, which apply to all vehicles"😉

I think it's a bit much to claim that riding up past a line
of stationary cars is "exceptionally dangerous". Of course
one has to be careful of left turners (and passengers
getting out etc) but the speeds are usually very low indeed,
and it seems like a generally acceptable way to proceed to
me. Maybe the Highway Code doesn't quite strictly permit it,
but it also was certainly not written with this case in mind
(if you consider is as being in a faster moving lane of
traffic then it is certainly ok). I go either way, depending
on the circumstances. Ok, someone can have a Saturday
    morning giggle....

"doesn't quite strictly permit it" - actually, it
    *specifically* disallows
    it.

"not written with this case in mind" - that's a major red
herring. Overtaking is defined as passing traffic that is
moving slower than you and makes no reference to
circumstances. The Highway Code as it currently stands is
clearly worded to take account of *all* overtaking,
    including cyclists overtaking slow-moving traffic.

Yebbut what about on the motorway when you're crawling along
at walking pace an your lanes going faster than the lane to
the right. Isn't a cyclist filtering through traffic a bit
    like that?

(Myself go with whatever side I think is safest, but with a
slight bias to the left hand side 'cos it's normally more
convenient. On the plus side I stop for red lights and only
occasionally do I magically transform into a pedestrian to
skip them (I've been assured that this is illegal too but I
    don't believe them).)

In the case where a cycle lane is painted in the road, it
specifically allows it. Does the presence or absence of the

The previous poster said "stationary traffic", and to talk
of this in terms of "overtaking" is indeed a stretch that
this part of the HC was certainly not designed to account
for. I presume you would say that if there is a stationary
(say, broken down, or even obviously intending to turn right
but failing to signalling) vehicle in the middle of the road
then all vehicles have to cross over to the RH lane to get
past legally. Undertaking queues is an entirely reasonable
and sensible procedure (circumstances permitting) so long as
it is done with appropriate care.

Don't quote the law if you're going to get it wrong.
Undertaking is not an offence. Sections of the Highway Code

Passing on the left is perfectly permissible when performed
