Quoted message said:My wife has just started a low carb diet and is at day 4 (bad breath
just started). However she has just devloped an intense rash (very
hot to the touch) on her arms and face. Is this a common side effect
of a low-carb diet?
No.
Quoted message said:She isn't eating anything she hasn't before, so I'm not sure that it
would be some sort of food allergy.
You would be surprised. Elimination diets (like the induction phase of
Atkins) reduce the masking or background 'noise' that your body develops
in response to eating a food that it is intolerant of on a regular
basis. Such types of diets increase sensitivity to intolerances,
thereby helping you pinpoint problem foods.
Then again, she could have come across a bug/pollen/mould she's
sensitive to or a plant like poison ivy. Or toxic shock syndrome.
Seek a doctor's advice.

Called up the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms regional office
and asked, "What wine goes best with an M-16?" The guy who answered
did his best to be helpful: "That depends. What are you smoking?"
