My wife has just started a low carb diet and is at day 4 (bad breath
just started). However she has just devloped an intense rash (very
hot to the touch) on her arms and face. Is this a common side effect
    of a low-carb diet?

    No.

She isn't eating anything she hasn't before, so I'm not sure that it
would be some sort of food allergy.

You would be surprised. Elimination diets (like the induction phase of
Atkins) reduce the masking or background 'noise' that your body develops
in response to eating a food that it is intolerant of on a regular
basis. Such types of diets increase sensitivity to intolerances,
thereby helping you pinpoint problem foods.

Then again, she could have come across a bug/pollen/mould she's
sensitive to or a plant like poison ivy. Or toxic shock syndrome.

    Seek a doctor's advice.

I would think that if that were a common reaction that we would be much
more aware of it on this newsgroup. I've never heard of anything like it
in the three years I've been around.

No. If you feel the need, see a doctor. As far as bad breath, I found
using Tom's toothpaste works the best because it has no artificial
sweeteners. I am amazed at the difference in my breath and it tastes better
    to.

Yes, I did have the same reaction within the first couple days of induction.

I did not eat much cheese before induction. Also salad dressings, vinegar,
mushrooms, fermented foods in general, milk products, and last but not least..
    Wheat.

I used olive oil with seasoning on salads. It broke me down to eliminate the
cheese. But I had to do it, or suffer the hives. I can now tolerate some
cheeses. I can now eat mushrooms, which I love.

So, have her elimate these foods for a couple weeks. Then reintroduce them one
at a time. Doug Freyburger helped me alot with this. 🙂

I went to a doctor for the hives also. The doc prescribed different creams and
ointments. Three different ones I believe. I suffered the hives until I
eliminated the foods I mentioned. The creams did not work. But I would have her
go to a doc, just to make sure. Also no frankenfoods!!

There is also a chapter in the Atkins book, that expalains it better than me.
Yeast infections, Clamydia (sp). Google for info also..

Then soon after eliminating these foods, I went into this craving mode. I
pinpointed that aspartame and caffeine were triggering the cravings. I felt
like a freaking science experiment for a time there. It worked its way out,
with detective work on my part.

    Good Luck!

  6. I have not heard of this either. I have heard of bumps from someone I knew
Low carbing but they didn't itch or burn. I would go see the doc. Rashes are
commonly caused by stress, or an infection of some sort.

    good luck,
