I absolutely cannot watch it, even the commercials. I hate
confrontational, angry, shouting TV reality shows.

It is another good reason for me to have cancelled the Food Network. I am
not at all interested in watching the guy rate and rave at the cheap help.
You can see why he goes from one place to another. He could never supervise
a kitchen staff on his own. No one in their right mind would work for the
guy.

It's not on Food Network. It's on Fox.

I can't watch that show for a minute. The torture, cruelty and
rudeness he displays to the students drives me crazy; who would put
up with that stuff from anyone.
I can't watch the students be humiliated for a TV show.

I'm certainly not saying anyone *has* to watch it. But of all the "reality
shows" out there, but most specifically things like Fear Factor and that
thing where they put you in the middle of nowhere and match you up with
members of a "tribe" (Survivor??), I'd rather be yelled at by a chef.
However rude he may be, he owns more than one successful restaurant
establishment. The prospect of being named head chef at a 4-star restaurant
if they win the competition probably serves some of these contestents well.

I recall one guy in the 2nd season who had only ever cooked while in prison.
You couldn't exactly expect him to be a kitchen whiz, doing quick rich
sauces or whipping up a great dessert. And forget about *plating* the food
to make it appear palatable! LOL But he applied and he stuck through a lot
of abuse for a long time before he was let go.

Then there was the other guy who kept sweating into the food. That was
disgusting!

Again, they sign up for this. They know what to expect. It's no longer a
new show, but they don't crank one out every year, either. It appears to
take them 2 years before they release the next "season". This tells me they
are taking some time to plot things out. Also to screen the contestants
from someone who is more likely to eat a bunch of raw grubs on the off
chance they win $10,000.

Again, I'm not saying anyone should watch the show if they don't want to.
But they DO know what they're signing up for. In fact, even when applying
for the first season I would be willing to bet they were given some
information about what to expect. Half of them probably didn't read it. 15
minutes of fame and all that 😉

give whatever it takes to work with him in one of his restaurants. And
his show, Kitchen Nightmares, is an immensely valuable teaching
resource for any restaurateur who is not reaching their full
potential. I might not like his act, but his knowledge and experience
are invaluable ... and his success as a a chef and restaurateur is
indisputable.

Well, his books are very good - I have more respect for the guy after
reading him. I love watching the show - mainly because I have never
been a line cook before and find it interesting how they get
everything out on time (or not). I have friends who are professional
chefs (CIA trained) and they have stories which match or exceed the
wackiness of Ramsay, so I guess I'm not all that shocked or disturbed.

It is his act that I am referring to. It is one thing to have a consultant
come into a restaurant and clean up some sloppy problems, but it is hard to
get staff to stick around when you are as abusive to them as he is.

I knew a couple of guys who had opened up several good restaurants and I
helped then out with one. I was out of work at the time and did some work
under the table for them. When the place started up I helped out in the
kitchen. One of the guys was great, but the other was a bit of an ass, too
much the Ramsey sort. One night I was helping out in the kitchen when he
came back and started carrying on about stupid stuff. He could have given
us a hand but chose instead of be abusive. If the place was swamped before
he started ranting I imagine things were even more hectic after I walked
out. I am not masochist enough to put up with that.

Like the old saying goes: "If you can't stand the heat, then get out
of the kitchen."

Have you ever worked in large, busy "silver service" restaurant? I
have, and the executive chef was every bit as profane, abusive and
demanding as Ramsay. And while staff may not have liked him, we sure
as hell respected him and his standards of professionalism ... and we
were proud to work there.

In my opinion, only the staff who deserved to be treated as dolts got
that treatment on Kitchen Nightmares, and those who didn't benefit
from being criticised for their lack of professionalism didn't belong
in the business in the first place.

I'm also talking about professionalism, and the success of Gordon
Ramsay's restaurants and his Michelin Stars go a long way to proving
that his exceptionally high standards are worth striving for.
