varandra glidande/rullande ytor.
rapsolja, syntetiska estrar, polyalfaolefiner, polyglykoler, silikoner,

    gleitmo 582; 582 Spray
    White Chain Lubricant
White, adhesive, semi-synthetic grease with gleitmo White Solid
Lubricants, which is liquified with a solvent for easy penetration into
the cavities of the chain. After evaporation of the solvent a tacky,
adhesive grease film is formed, which is resistant to acids and lyes,
protects against corrosion and can neither be thrown off nor washed
    away by water.
    APPLICATION AREAS:
Slow speed, high speed and power transmitting chains of all types at
temperatures from -15 ºC to +120 ºC, also where resistance to water
    and
steam, acids and lyes is required.
White adhesive chain grease for highest requirements

    So there.

Have we actually `established that Shimano lubes their
chains with grease'? I do not remember an article recently
that presents strong evidence for the assertion. I know
that the chain ships with a slick, somewhat gummy
    substance. What is it?

I don't know about Shimano, but the SRAM factory lubricant is made by a
Swedish company called Gleitmo, who in turn make dozens of different
special-purpose lubricants including at least one specifically for
    roller chains.

In any case, there's a fine line between oil and grease; grease is just
    oil thickened with soap.

But is the manufacturer's chain preparation grease?

    --
    Michael Press

NO! It's an insidious plot by the bicycle chain manufacturers' cartel,
colluding to make their products fail prematurely by coating all new chains
with a product that looks, smells, feels, and has all the outwards signs of
being a lubricant, but actually isn't! It MUST be removed and replaced with
special, third-party chain lubricant (after using a special, third-party
chain cleaner of course) or all manner of unspecified disaster will occur.
Don't say you weren't warned, when your chain breaks and is shortly followed
by your neck doing the same, if you fail to yield to the prevailing
    paranoia.

But is the manufacturer's chain preparation grease?

As been stated a bazillion times:

"A coating of GLEITMO? the finest chain lubricant in the industry,
provides superior combination of friction protection and dirt fighters."

    (From SRAM site) -- FGI

Those bazillion time do not answer the question.

    --
    Michael Press

    Absolutely correct!

Every time some voice of reason raises this valid question, the chain
manufacturers send out their shills to speak sweet reassurances to the
masses and lull them back into their dull acceptance that chain prep is
equivalent to an actual lubricant. Resist!

Oh, fer cryin out loud open a box, separate one link, wipe
the grease on your finger. . .

Do you have something to say about the fine semantic line
betweeen a very heavily bodied oil and a grease -which is
that with a soap binder? I don't see the practical
difference. If it is not a true grease but rather a very
thick oil - which behaves the same - what possible
difference would it make for our purpose here?

    Smörjmedel

Well, that settles it. I for one will no longer lube my chain
with anything other than Smörjmedel. I will ride all the
way to Sweden to get Smörjmedel if I have to. I don't care
if nitpickers and petty little minds try to tell me that Smörjmedel
is just Swedish for "grease." I just like the way it sounds.

    Smörjmedel

Apparently people are so anti-Swedish that no one could bear it long
enough to scroll down to the English:

    Quoted message said:

    So there.

From the Swedish part deleted above and from common sense, I presume

"White Solid Lubricants" refers to teflon. Oh, and by the way,
"Smörjmedel" means lubricant, not necessarily grease. However, in this
    case it is (mostly).
