  1. Well....yesterday at the dentist, I learned that my inherited from mom
and pop gum disease is much, much worse, despite constant flossing,
water-pic-ing and Listerine swishing....so much worse, in fact, that
plans are now to remove all of my upper molars on both sides, right up
to my canines. A partial plate, for me, to the tune of 1200 bucks.

The doc was shocked---asked me "how in the world my gums could have
gotten this much worse in the last six months? What have I been doing
    different?"

    I instantly denied that I had done anything "different". I felt....if I
told him Id been LCing, he would jump on it with both feet, blaming my
    worsening gums on my diet.
---which I felt sure was NOT to blame.

Only today, Im wondering. Since the only "difference" IS my
LCing....and since my LCing occurred since last visit when I had "early
and correctable gum disease".....well....if it aint my diet,
then.....what did cause this? Im about to lose most of my frickin upper
    teeth for SOME reason.....?

The dentist is aware of my predisposition, genetically. But six months
ago, he was fairly sure we could stop the progress of the gum disease
and bone loss. Yesterday, he said he had NEVER seen anybody's gums go
that much worse in a six month period. Ive been taking this thing real
seriously for the last six months, BTW---religiously flossing, water
pic-ing after every single meal. In other words, Ive done everything he
told me to do, at our last visit, that he was confident would stop the
    progress of the disease.

I saw the new x-rays---even I could see how much bone has been lost.

    WTF???

    Any ideas on this?

It is true that both my parents had lost all their teeth to gum disease
before they were 45. At least I beat 'em by 10 years.

Still....the question remans, HOW could I get SO much worse since last
visit?....and the only thing "different" is my diet. I mean...going
from, "We caught this early enough to stop it", to "My God....what has
happened here?---these teeth will have to GO"....is pretty
frickin....unusual. In fact, he said it usually takes years of NO
treatment to see a plummet like this.

  2. They were simply wrong in thinking that it could be stopped and they caught
it too late in the first place. Sorry.

Don't know if it means anything but I was told by my dentist not to use
mouthwash because it's too harsh, and I also had a problem with gum disease.
Mine has improved considerably with using tee-pees (little brushes) instead
    of floss.

Increase your vitamin C intake and include Bioflavenoids.

See if you can heal them first before letting them yank teeth! :-(

Well, unless you are supplementing, you CAN get some deficiencies
avoiding fruit, especially if you are not getting enough fresh veggies.
Lowering calories alone can cause some deficiencies, but we've been down
    this road before. ;-)

If you need some supplement suggestions, I'd be glad to help.

    See above.

Dieting, no matter WHAT type of diet, can cause nutritional
deficiencies! This is why taking good supplements is pretty much
    mandatory IMHO.

Improper use of flossing and waterpicing can cause problems gum
problems to worsen. I find it doubtful that LC-ing was the
    cause.
Have you ever checked your Blood Glucose levels? The onset of
Type II diabetes and elevated BGs can cause dramatic changes in
    gum diseases.

Have you had a blood test for diabetes recently? - peridontal disease (and
any kind of fungus/infection nasty) gets much worse with high blood glucose.
I had some when my diabetes was diagnosed, which has completely gone away
    now I've established good control.

My dad went from just barely detectible problems one year to
severe bone loss the next year, so it happens.

By chance he told my brother the veterinarian and asked if
there's any animal treatment for such a problem. My brother
suggested he start taking 3000-4000 mg of oyster shell
calcium daily for a year. That's a few tablets at every
    meal plus at bedtime.

Within a year half of dad's bone loss had reversed and the
dentist through it was a miracle. Two year later it was
all reversed and he's since tapered off to 1000-1500 mg
    daily to maintain.

3000-4000 is a very large dosage, and oyster shell calcium
is perhaps the least absorbable type. But Dad's body was
calcium deficient so his body did absorb it.

Saying this helped my Dad isn't saying it will help you,
but calcuim supplements aren't toxic even in large dosages.
It may be worth a try to take several times the normal
    dosage.

Do you happen to be aware of the fact that one of the main and most
obvious symptoms of sub-clinical scurvey happens to be soft, bleeding
and receding gums. Kinda sounds a bit like "gum disease" don't it.

Try 1000 or 2000 mgs of vitamins C four times a day with food. I'll bet
dollars to donuts that your next visit to the dentist will be much much
better. Then ask him or her why they are so completely ignorant of the
value of vitamin for gum health.

There are no toxicity issues whatsoever with vitamin C. The worse that
can happen if you take too much is you get the runs, just cut back a
bit, it is called the bowel tolerance level.

It ain't in the genes, it's in the diet. The fact that your parents
lost all their teeth has little bearing on anything except as an
indication of their general diet and their vitamin C intake at the
    time.

  10. BJ---no kidden? Hmmm. Well, I had blood drawn yesterday, too and should
receive the results in a day or two.

I have lots of diabetes on both sides of the family...and my last blood
sugar, before I started LCing WAS somewhat elevaed.

    Thanks for the heads-up---

  13. TC---uh...yeah, it sure does sound a lot like what Ive got.....and Im
embarrassed to admit, I do not take vitamin C...beause many years ago,
when the "Take C to cure a cold" came out, I gobbled a bunch (3000mg)
and within four hours had about a dozen "cold sores" (Herpes Simplex)
all over my face--- The doc said I could not tlerate the acidity of
vitamin C. Is there a less acidic form. I wonder? I would hate to go
thru that again...I looked like a Leper. ...very bad and lasted about
    five weeks. Painful, too.

I wll look for some kind that isnt so acidic---and start with a low dose
and work up to a bigger one. thanks for getting my attention, LOL---this
would have never occured to me.

happened here?---these teeth will have to GO"....is pretty
frickin....unusual. In fact, he said it usually takes years of NO

The fact that your parents lost
all their teeth has little bearing on anything except as an indication
of their general diet and their vitamin C intake at the time.

Doug---well....if oyster shell calcium is the least
absorbable...shouldnt I take sme other kind? Do you know what kind is
    MOST absorbable?

There are mixed opinions on what form of calcium is the
best absorbed. Some say go with calcium carbonate and
get it as finely ground as possible - shale powder or
coral calcium I think. Others say calcium citrate.
I worry about the iron content of powdered shale.

Note that TC suggested much extra vitamin C and I
suggested much extra calcium. Neither has much down
side so try both. If the problem is solved and you
don't know which did it, so what.

BJ---no kidden? Hmmm. Well, I had blood drawn yesterday, too and should
receive the results in a day or two.

I have lots of diabetes on both sides of the family...and my last blood
sugar, before I started LCing WAS somewhat elevaed.

What is 'somewhat elevated?' and was it a fasting glucose?

This is very good news---if it worked for him, it sure could for me,
too....and at least I wont lose the bottom teeth, too...amybe. Thanks
    very much---

Calcium Citrate, I think. You need magnesium and D for it to do any good.
Also, you need to at least take a multi vitamin/mineral.

Buffered vitamin C = calcium ascorbate, it's buffered with a little calcium
    carbonate.

Calcium Ascorbate. Buffered. Cheap. Longer shelf life than ascorbic
acid. One quarter teaspoon is about 1000 mg. Add it to an oz or two of
juice (low-carb of course) and stir until disolved. That reaction
sounds odd to me. My son had a nasty case of cold sores until he
finally took my advice and started taking vit C and L-Lysine, he was
    cleared in about four days.

I wll look for some kind that isnt so acidic---and start with a low dose
and work up to a bigger one. thanks for getting my attention, LOL---this
would have never occured to me.

The amazing thing is that it doesn't even occur to a dentist. I had a
talk with mine a few months ago. He's a really competent dentist as far
as doing the procedures go, but he had no clue about vit C and gum
disease. They are trained to push brushing, flossing and regular check
up$$$$, if you get my drift.

Some people at Harvard Health don't agree with you about extra calcium
and vitamin C. They are suggesting that it increases you risk of cancer
    by quite a large factor.

That's why I suggested C also, along with Bioflavenoids.
I've read that Bf's increase the half life of C in the bloodstream and
enhance it's effects so you don't have to take as much.

Too much C can cause diarrhea...

    Cheers!
