OB food: Spent a long weekend in Half Moon Bay, CA - ate at a
wonderful hole-in-the wall seafood place called Ketch Joanne's (17
Johnson Pier, Half Moon Bay, CA). The place is quaint with sea-related
decor and pub-like athmosphere - very clean and the staff was friendly
and helpful. Had Boston Clam Chowder that was thick, creamy, with
chunks of flavorful clams and potatoes, and a hint of something
smoky...Probably one of the best chowders I have ever eaten. Entree
was grilled seasoned prawns served with onions and mushrooms in a
shrimp-based sauce (almost like a soup) with rice pilaf and steamed
veggies on the side - these prawns were HUGE and prepared perfectly.
House salad is a mix of wonderful greens with tomatoes, beets, and
kidney beans - a delicious surprise. Portion size is fairly large, and
the prices are comparable to most places on the coast. DH had fish and
chips - which he said appeared to be cod and was very tasty. Sis had
fried prawns and reported that they were the best she had ever eaten.
The recent closure of Hwy 1 at Devil's Slide has been really hard on
the local businesses and restaurants on the coast. I am hoping they
can get the mudslide cleaned up soon and business can recover.

Hmm. I had just the opposite experience recently... Lousy service,
greasy food, and super-expensive <$$$> for what we got. It _was_ our
favorite place to eat prior when visiting HMB but not after this last
trip. We'll hit "Pasta Moon" on Main Street from now on.

Wow - really? My entree was the most expensive - $21.95, I think.
This was late Sunday night and they weren't busy so maybe we lucked
out. We compared the menus of 4 or 5 different places and they were
all about the same price range. Red Ginger looked interesting - but we
had a toddler in tow and didn't want to disrupt other diners in a
formal setting. Pasta Moon has some good Pizza - and is across the
street from Zaballah House where we stayed for our wedding. We stayed
at Beach House this trip which was wonderful!

before any tables in our area saw a waitress -- and two were pretty
surly about it when she finally came back out. We should have taken
the cue to leave and never come back but we were seated in a nice
booth, near the fire, it was then full lunch rush, and we decided that
the extra customers would bring out extra servers. I hate when I'm
wrong on so many counts. We ordered the fish fry, the daily special
with fries and a dinner salad, three kids' plates, and soft drinks for
everyone. US$60.00 without tip. The fish came out dark and greasy. The
special was alright but not worth US$9.95. And none of the
daughter-units finished their meals -- even though all of them talked
about how starved they were going in.

I wrote A Letter explaining my disatisfaction with the experience but
never heard back. <shrug> That's okay. Pasta Moon has a better view
and I'm really wanting to try Doug's BBQ on our next day-trip.

That's too bad. I will keep that in mind next time we go. I like the
chicken sandwich at Two Fools Cafe, too - but DH has had a bad meal
there. Haven't found any restaurant in HMB that is 100% reliable yet.
The Chinese restaurant that was where Red Ginger is used to be good and
inexpensive too, but I guess they coundn't swing it.
