    Dumbass,

Why would I get [censored] if Georgio wins a big race? Where did I say
that? I just said KBK ain't that big of a deal.

Try leaning how to read before you talk smack.

If winning KBK isn't a big deal, why did you bother bringing up races like
    Sea Otter?

To point out how pathetic NRC prize money is compared to other "pro" sports.

Yes, for starters it's included in almost all cable subscriptions in

in Flanders too, and cable is standard here.

Yeah that's a big difference between the Low Countries and its
surroundings; cable reaches 99.99% of households. People demand it like
water, power, sewerage and telephone lines.

    "Leaning" how to read? OK.
You seemed kind of passionate about the minor stature of KBK.
It is a UCI 1.1 race after all, and probably one of the more
hotly contested ones cause it's at the beginning of the season.

I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, and a little hurt that you
think I'd be so deliberately mean to you.

No taking away from GH, but 1.1 ain't what it used to be.

Just couldn't pass up agreeing. George sucks. He should quit racing

Was it a Cat 4/5 [censored] run downhill with a tailwind. I'm surprised he
    even finished.

Face it Magilla, you're a [censored].

    Deal with it,

No, you didn't say that. But what you did say implied it and so I was
being sarcastic in just putting your rant into two words.

Why you find the need to poo-poo on someone's win just because the
race isn't a spring classic....... well we both know why, now don't
    we.

I looked at the 2005 race calendar courtesy cyclingnews.com,
and you are correct. UCI category seems not as meaningful
a way to rank races as is place within the season, tradition,
proximity to bigger races, importance placed on them by
Belgian toughguys ... We need a better method of categorizing
race prestige, perhaps an RBR scale of "wasps." Zero wasps
up to 10 wasps for the races that are more important for the
    team, sponsors, TV, etc.

Generally speaking, in the hierarchy of sports from top level down to
amateur, give a equivalent of where you think US domestic professional
bicycle racing is in other sports.

What if we rolled the clock back to the rules/pro team structures we had

the quality of American domestic professional bicycle racing compared to
domestic professional bicycle racing in other countries? Domestic

    teams based in that country.

I think the winner of a US pro/NRC race needs to get AT LEAST $10,000
especially when you consider he's got to split that with like 6 other
guys. That's a significant dilution factor that almost no other sport
    has to contend with.

That's fine. Where's it going to come from? An alternative is that you
end up with just a handful of NRC races and all the other races just go on
anyway with their existing prizelists. As for the dilution, motorsports has
    a significant factor as well.

The difference between the prize lists of events like Wimbledon and the
Masters is that those athletes _don't_ get a salary from a team and have to
pay their expenses out of their own pocket. Caddies get a split too, btw
    (just not an equal one).

    Quoted message said:

Making comparisons to 20 years ago is neither here nor there. Once
Lance leaves the sport, you likely won't have a U.S. company like
Discovery kicking in $15 million/year for a D1 team with medicore riders.

Sorry, but it is relevant. The depth of pro fields in the US 20 years ago
wasn't sufficient to hold credible, interesting races. I don't know exactly
how many licensed pros there were back then (excluding the one day
independents who paid for licenses so they could start CoreStates), but lets
say it's increased tenfold. Twenty years later, has the number of quality
pro riders increased tenfold as well, or has it just easier to get on a pro
team? Why should mediocre riders be on the start line for races with $10k to
win? Maybe that's why there aren't many $10k-to-win domestic races.

    Quoted message said:

I think the US pro domestic scene has been slowly improving overall, but
the RATE of improvement pales in comparison to baseball, football, and
basketball. You can throw NASCAR in there even though it's not a sport
and their drivers by no means athletes (except in their own mind)

Generally speaking, in the hierarchy of sports from top level down to
amateur, give a equivalent of where you think US domestic professional
bicycle racing is in other sports.

Why would you expect a big improvement when it is a niche, not mainstream,
sport? Why is it we want the prestige and big money of a mainstream sport,
but want to maintain the snobbery of a niche sport?

    Quoted message said:

The problem with US cycling is complex. I think the quality of the US
domestic scene is probably comparable to any European country.

Now I know you're not serious.

    The

    Quoted message said:

bigest difference with the NRC is you have to get on a plane every
weekend. In Europe, it's less expensive to have a team compete in a
    particular country/region.

Then with 1/3 less events to worry about this year, you should be one happy
ape. However, what do team expenses have to do with prizelists?

an UCI grade doesn't assess the value of this race. The spring classics

The UCI grade does attempt to asses the relative value of different races.
Last year Het Volk was a 1.1 and KBK was a 1.2. This year Het Volk is a
1.HC and KBK is a 1.1. By definition, "a 1.1 ain't what it used to be".

    Devolder extends

After his impressive riding in the Belgian opening weekend, Stijn
Devolder has extended his contract with the Discovery Channel team
until 2007. "Johan Bruyneel was in the country on Friday and gave me a
contract proposition," Devolder was quoted in Het Laatste Nieuws as
saying. "I did not discuss money. I received a guarantee that I can
grow further here as a rider."

Devolder was personally congratulated by Lance Armstrong after his
riding. "Lance followed via the efforts of Volderke via the Internet,"
said Discovery's Dirk Demol to Sportwereld.be. "He was really impressed
by what he conjured up out of the legs. He liked what he saw. When I
took on Stijn last year, nine out of ten people asked aloud what that
guy could do in such a big team. Stijn is a pure natural. He'll open
the eyes of a lot of people. Yes, even in the near future."
