Not at all.

One of the problems with soccer in the US is that your average
American sports fan views it as a sport for girls and children. A
little graphic violence can't help but dispel that image. The
incident has gotten a lot of coverage on regular and sports news
programs and even on late night TV. As they say, there is no such
thing as bad publicity.

BTW, the WC Final had huge ratings in the US, which were higher than
any of the NBA Final games and all but one of the last World Series
games. Nothing impresses the US sports establishment more than
ratings. Perhaps soccer is about to replace ice hockey as the US #4
sport.

By the ratings, and as a Canuck with ice in his veins* it pains me to
say this, but hockey is about the number #7 sport. NASCAR, bowling,
probably poker or arena football by now.

Hockey has tremendous regional support in certain markets. Even some
surprising ones, like Carolina, can do quite well at least when they're
winning. It also has, how to put this, a reputation of being a "real"
sport. The fact that is fast, dynamic, and violent (I speak here of the
clean checks and physical play rather than mere fights or goonery) seems
to establish a certain respectability beyond its current nationwide
popularity.

*I live in Lotusland out on the west coast, and we've only had natural
ice thick enough to support skating once in 30 years.

I think it's easy to jump on the bandwagon when a team is winning. But those
are fair weather fans. Similarly, consider the OLN ratings now that LANCE is

a bit naive, especially Zidane. The Italians outplayed the French in every

What part of 1-1 don't you understand? The Italians outplayed the French in
one way- penalty kicks. Trezegeut missed his. Fortunately for Italy (and
unfortunately for France), that's the most important stat. In fact, France
did better that Italy in shots, shots on goal, and corners.The Italians were
playing 11-10 and France still looked better than they did. And this against
a team that was so hard up for players that they had to convince their best
players to come out of retirement. It was a very even match by two teams
that have a similar style.

And the US was unable to beat ANY team they faced during the World Cup.
That's why Arena was fired.

and will have a good rest-of-his-career. But ten years from
now, Zidane will be Zidane and Materazzi will be "that guy
Zidane headbutted." That's just the way it is.

In fact, it's a little bit like the time Armstrong chased down
Fillippo Simeoni. It was stupid and made Lance look petty,
but a few years from now, or even right now, Armstrong is
Armstrong and Simeoni is that guy that Lance chased down.

Only one goal was made all night. Care to guess which equip made it? I'm
not saying the French played poorly. They played very well, just the
Italians played better. Too bad about Zidane, the Italians were looking
pretty worn near the end. They had a better chance with Zidane in the game,
not in the locker room. But Zidane didn't care about his team or the fact
that they had no more subs, he only cared about getting respect and he was
not good enough to earn it on the field, had to resort to violence. That's

Not over the next few years, but in ten years... you might be right. It was
one thing to have a reputation for being angry and tempermental, but it is
important to show cool when it's needed and to play as a member of the team.
I understand what you are saying, but I think that is a hard call to make
right now. Maybe the French people will forget his temperment, I'm not so
sure the rest of the world will. I'm sure Italy will not, as they believe
it possibly won them a championship.

Man, I lost a tear or two on that one. It's nice to be able to laugh at

Referees should be able to tell when a player is full of [censored] because all of
these guys have excellent balance skills. No headbutt is going to make
someone with such great balance skills lose his balance. It can knock him
around, but not off his feet. It certainly would not knock you 2-3 feet off
the ground without the subject moving back an inch. On this point, the
French are correct, however, the act was already committed.
