I'm about to hack and file the dropouts on my 1995 Kona Explosif frame so that it can take my single speed setup without a singleator. If I manage to totally mess this up I shall need some new horizontal dropouts welded on. I've been quoted £95 + £25 shipping from my LBS and would still have to fork out for a respray or just spray the last third of the stays myself. Do you know of any cheaper frame builders or does this seem like a reasonable price? The frame would be sent to a builder in Bristol but I'm
Any recommened frame builders would be appreciated

Bob Jackson would do it for £80 plus £30 shipping; a plain colour respray is £65. I'd recommend them from personal experience, although the prices have gone up a bit since they did my frames in February.

Chas Roberts is in Croydon, and therefore nearer. He makes very very nice frames so go in with eyes shut and without money.
Thank you all for your replies. I've managed to modify the existing dropouts without causing too much damage. I had to file the axle hole about 1.5mm closer to the bottom bracket and all seems to be OK. That saved me a few bob :o)

Thank you

I'm a great fan of Chas Roberts in Croydon. They did a lovely job of replacing a chain stay on my Fausto Coppi last year. Web page at
