Anyone can choose to do a fat fast.....there are not qualifications needed....the question is more of whether it would be necessary...

So you use it as a sort of systemic purge? I've heard of folks eating nothing but fruit for a few days as a purge. Is the low carb version of that low fat tactic?

Well, you can start getting into a rut, maybe eating too much, and the fat fast more or less stops that trend. Kind of how a real fast will do it. I crave nice crispy green veggies after a few days of the FF.
Bunky42-Not sure how I missed it, but I'd never heard this aspect of Atkins.
The fat fast does not appear in the 2002 or 1972 editions of the book. It only appears and the 1993 and 1999 edtions. That makes it easy to miss. The 1993 and 1999 editions offer the sort of sample menus Bunky42 mentions.
There is an interesting fact that is demonstrated by the results of the original fat fast experiment: For the same number of total calories, more fat and less protein results in better loss at lesat in the short term.
The original fat fast had groups on 1000 calories, 90% fat or 90% protein or 90% carbs. The experimenters likely expected similar loss rates or maybe the 90% fat group to see the least loss. It turned out the 90% fat group lost the most stored fat and the least lean.

That turns out not to be the case, at least for the 2002 edition. It's in there (pp. 272-4 in the paperback), and it's in the index.
