Betwys is just too busy to be really pleasant. But from
Capel it can make a good walk. Head north from the campsite
and take the walk through the forest that runs parallel to
the A5. Come out at the Ugly house and then take the walk
alongside the river into Betwys - Spa supermarket and lots
of gear shops. Re-trace your steps back to the ugly house,
cross over the A5 and wander through little back roads back
towards Capel. This is a decent walk and more energetic than
you might believe - just the thing to keep the muscles loose
while you prepare for another killer day. Alternatively, go
north from the campsite to Myned Minas and the lake (spell?)
- take the path east towards the next lake and then go south
on the forest track that dissects the two lakes to finish
back near the Ugly house - then take the forest track west
back to the Camp Site. From the second lake you can then
walk into Betwys and then back following route 1.

These are lower level but nice walking days. You get to
Betwys where you can easily spend more money than is good
for you but you can get away from the coach trippers rather
quickly which, to me, is pretty important!

None of these walks should give your knee too much trouble.

I certainly couldn't do something at the end of May but
Snowdonia in July sounds very attractive - it would be good
to put faces to names at last!

Well you've announced it on the group. All you need to do
now give a definite date and place to meet and if anyone
else turns up I don't see any reason why it shouldn't count.

On the last expedition there were only 4 of us actually
camping (not including the day walkers who visited us) and
then only that many for one night. Smallest expedition so
far in terms of total people camping. Dartmoor was the next
smallest with just 6 of us, but both of those were wild
camping trips so that's only to be expected.

Well suggest a date then. Anytime in July.

We originally decided on the last weekend of July because of
a mistaken assumption that the first meet took place at that
time, but the first meet actually took place in the first
week. Last year we went on the third week, so I don't think
the exact date/week really matters, so long as it's sometime
in July. Fair enough?

So far we've had rain, hot sun, changeable and changeable.
What will it be this year I wonder?

Not too mention Dyfi Forest, the Tarren Hills and the
Hirnants (sometimes included with the Arans, sometimes with
the Berwyns). The Arenigs is a big area which could easily
be split into smaller areas - the NW area is sometimes
included with the Arenigs but sometimes with the Moelwyns -
I prefer to think of that as separate, i.e. the Ffestiniog
Hills for want of a better name).

As for the Berwyns, in spite of being outside the national
park boundary I consider them to be part of the Snowdonia
hills, they're all part of the same chain of hills
stretching from Cadair through the Arans. There's no logical
physical division along the park boundary there. Stuff
political divisions, geologically the Berwyns are part of
Snowdonia.

Dont try to define boundaries here.. Madness lies
there... Just one huge range with no low passes from the
Dee to Tal y Llyn.

I gave up a long time ago....

Just stick a chapter boundary anywhere.. they are all pretty
valid. I prefer the waste between Bwlch y Groes and Hirnant
roads.. but each to their own. Splitting the Dyfi forest
from the Arans is harder, Oerddrws is obvious because of the
A road, but its such a continuous ridge..

Sounds good Stuart. I've decided that walking sucks and I've
taken up cycling. But I will still turn out for Ex 15 with
my trusty Argos. Is this an Ex 15 fantasy thread or are we
actually going to do it?

I believe I suggested this myself a couple of years ago, I
think I called it a "spontaneous meet", but I never got
around to proposing any.

I agree though, it would save all that waffling for months.
