  1. Does anyone know how much excercise per day it takes to see weight loss?

  2. Only eating less will guarantee weight loss, but exercise can help
    tremendously.

    30 mins on the treadmill works for me, even when I'm not watching my eating.

    But the strange thing is that 30 mins walking does not seem to work.
    The treadmill keeps me on the straight & narrow!

    30 mins swimming works too.

    It has been proven that if a person would do the low-carb thing they
    automatically cut their calories but that they can eat until they are
    full. Hell my calories cut so much and I was totally amazed but I

    I think you are looking at this from the wrong perspective. Ask yourself:
    "Am I in shape?"
    If you're not physically fit, you need some exercise to help get yourself
    there. And, in doing so, you will lose weight from the exercise as your
    muscles become toned and active. I just got through reading a book by Dr.
    Bob Arnot called "Wear and Tear--Stop the pain and put the spring back in
    your body".

    He gives opinions on various exercises based on their possibility of hurting
    the joints (or not). He talks about the machines at clubs and sports, too.
    It's worth a read.

    Arnot has osteoarthritis. Arnot, by his own admission, has returned to
    skiing, running, hiking and other activities which continue to degenerate
    his articular cartilage. He is one bad event from a total hip replacement.

    His recent claim to fame is to have "found" the wonders of the
    "Glucosamine/Chondroiton" ( his misspelling not mine) complex after 20
    years in OA network coverage. If he spent less time being Mr. NBC and more
    time in clinical medicine, or simply paying attention, he would have
    "found" that GC dosing has been highly effective in reducing the narrowing
    of the joints and in some cases regenerating articular cartilage. For a
    decade.

    We get ditties from Arnot like "I¢d argue strongly that preventing a bad
    event is prevention." Well, duh, ya' think?

    It gets tiring to see physicians writing about old news as if it is new
    news just to smack out a few bucks. Arnot shouts his "discovery" with
    quotes like this. "The earlier you start the better, but whatever stage
    you're at, Wear and Tear has the answers."

    Interested in where Arnot's head is today? "I can jump off a precipice into
    the steepest couloir in Jackson Hole, surf the toughest onshore break at
    Bondi Beach, Australia -- all the things I wanted to do as a kid but never
    dared!" lol He had brains when he was younger.

    If Arnot does anything, he brings to focus to the fact that OA has no
    preventative effort in medicine except those osteos/orthos/IMs that are
    bright enough to encourage the use of GC in *all* of the populace. That's
    right, everyone especially those who are at high risk. Those would be ppl
    who have previous lower body joint injury, those with malformities, gait
    issues and women over 45.

    OA is the downside to an ageing population which is often developed (early
    onset) from an overactive childhood and the incorrect selection of (too
    many) sports. Got Buddy out playing football for the Old High School? Buddy
    will pay a severe price in his forties. Got Susie out 7 days a week on the
    soccer field? Susie's knee replacement will be expensive.

    We are caught between the rock and the hard place. Most of us are either
    frenetically overactive or couch slugs. Somewhere we have lost our senses
    in moderation.

    It is not if but when are you going to be hit with OA. All you have to do
    is live long enough. How you treat your body, from childhood to death, will
    be the marker for how soon you will be struck with OA. Remember this when
    your child puts on his cleats.

  9. It is possible to lose weight without exercise.

    If trying to lose without dieting, the level of exercise needed may be
    large. You might consider the level of exercise shown in the TV show The
    Biggest Loser as an indication.

  10. i find that following my LOW CARB WAY OF EATING, and walking 30
    minutes 3X WEEK was the key for me!

    steppers, treadmill, walking, and running. Sports he dislikes because of
    their possibility of injury to joint tissues are: tennis, skiing,
    basketball, volleyball, football, and soccer. His book is mostly about
    trying to protect joints so that osteoarthritis and mechanical problems with
    the joints won't affect people.

    Gait problems in the populace have been known for decades. The art of
    orthotics has been a disciplined practiced for decades.

    Arthritis is chemically generated not mechanically. There is no such thing

    Here is what I write about that: "The ground fundamentally alters the way
    you walk or run. Mu calls this altering gait mechanics."

    So, instead, Arnot runs and hikes. With degenerative articular cartilage in
    both his right hip and knees.

    Ever run uphill? Downhill? Is everybody running on flat, softly
    compactedbutjustright earth? Who said you had to run on the treadmill
    anyway?

    Ya think? So we trade off cardiovascular health for potential degenerative
    diseases of the lower limbs?

    Inherent mechanical flaws? Well, that means all the bow legged, knock
    kneed, foot slappers, pronators, supinators and dwarfs are out of luck.

    Hw wrote about 20% of that book. Suzanne Bagin, his assistant did almost
    all the work.

    He could have saved a lot of time if he simply said "In moderation, almost

    Good shoes are important!

    I've done a lot of walking in my day - mostly when I was really overweight
    (300+ lbs). With poor shoes and too much ambition, walking got my feet
    messed up badly. I used to be in such pain every night...it all began
    because I was trying to walk too fast on a hard surface while wearing cheap
    shoes and being very heavy. My body was trying to cash a check that my feet
    couldn't pay up on.

    Interesting. I've been treadmilling lately. I don't plan to run, but I do
    set the incline as high as I can and then increase the speed slowly, until
    the HR gets jacked up. I do begin to feel some strain on the lower
    back.....I back off before it goes too far. As for the feet, I do seen an
    advantage there. The treadmill presents the same flat surface....whereas
    walking on ground it more problematic, imo.

    Seems like an advantage if you don't overdo it.

    Yea! I turned to stationary bikes after I developed foot problems from
    walking too fast over hard surface.

    Tai Chi, Yoga (big fan of yoga), Cross-country skiing,

    Water sports seems like a good idea. Something for me to consider in teh
    future.
