  1. Today, I completed my final ride on the bike that got me into cycling nearly 10 years ago. I purchased the Fuji finest AL from Ebay back in 2004 for $320 and have driven it faithfully since. Over the years much has been changed on the bike: it had 3 different cranksets, 4 wheelsets, 3 saddles, 6 fresh bar tapes, fresh cabling twice, 5 pedal sets, 2 rear derailleurs and many chains, cassettes, tires and brake pads. I added aerobars and over time adopted a more and more agressive position.

    Although much has been changed, the frame, steel fork, handlebars and brifters are original. Each part bears witness to the many events we have shared:

    - My first flat tire
    - My first broken spoke
    - First experience with clipless pedals
    - First charity ride
    - First century ride
    - Rainy epic all day rides
    - Many, many commuting miles
    - Snowy rides
    - A handful of impressive Strava segments
    - My first triathlon
    - My first crash - the handlebar is still bent
    - Riding through flooded trails
    - Epic saddle sores

    Even now with 3 "nicer" road bikes, I still put the most miles on the Fuji. Lately, however, an ominous click/creak was becoming more frequent. I couldn't track down the source until today when I made a close inspection of the frame:

    A crack was propagating across the joint between the seat tube and bottom bracket on the left hand side. The crack is around approximately 30 to 40% of the circumference of the tube. Needless to say that I can no longer confidently ride it.

    Farewell faithful old friend, it has been a wonderful experience.

  2. I too had a aluminum bike that only lasted about 6 years before a crack formed at the top of the head tube and extended down about an inch. The bike was never involved in any sort of accident, nor was it even ridden much (I had another bike I rode most of the time), but that experience led me to never buy an aluminum bike again, not to mention the road buzz it generated gave me another reason never to buy another AL bike again and why I didn't ride it much.

    There were two cracks recently on the fork of a 2013 Allez and I just got a nice shinny new fork from a warranty claim! [IMG]files.cyclingforums.combig smile.png[/IMG]

    It also was making some creaking sounds but these were apparently something to do with the headset bearings, but when first heard they were kinda scary.

  5. I have considered fixing it. From my brief research online, TIG welding seems to be the way to go. I have dabbled in most manly endeavors, but have not yet had any experience with welding and I have to access to a TIG. I think I would have to pay to get it done - which may end up being pretty spendy.

    The bike is set aside right now, awaiting my stripping of the components. I may try to rescue the frame but need to get more info.

    I know exactly what you are going through. I have an 11 year old commuter, 80 000 km, aluminium frame that is also recently cracked.

    I loved this bike. We also have been been where you have gone. We also have the memories & stories. I really do feel bad throwing it out to pasture.

    My steed has cracks on both sides at the junction of the top, down & stay.

    I have a new animal. Because I love the way my old resto steel Abeni feels, I got a cheap & cheerful Look frame that that I will throw all the running gear on.

    I just have to wait wait for the 22.2 stem and STI downtube adaptors, then I can offically put the old girl to sleep.

    PS: Maydog, I have seen you doing ridiculous rides. We have morning commutes at 0 (32) and I am quivering. I don't know how you do it. Anyway, keep it up!

  12. I couldn't let a box of parts go to waste. The derailleurs and brakes were very corroded and needed a good spit shine and dose of grease but work fine after an overhaul.

    I picked up a 65cm steel leader frame, steel fork, cable set and headset off ebay. The cinelli cork tape came for free using some credit I had on the Clymb. After less than $200 and a few hours of work I have this:

    The build was straightforward, the only hack I had to do was shim up the front derailleur clamp. I ended up using strips cut from a plastic bottle - it looks OK. I peeled the labels off the Vuelta HD wheelset.

    Initial impressions are good, all the mechanicals are dialed and it felt very comfortable taking a few spins around the block. My only regret is that there are no eyelets for a rear rack - I plan to solve that with some p-clamps. I hope to get in a longer ride later today.

    Finally I have pulled my finger out and built this bike up.

    I was also really lucky on ebay, 1st time ever! The morning of the day that I flew out to Italy, I won a full 6500 groupset (minus the brakes) for $110.50. Everything, especially the shifters are firm and almost unused. Even the plastic caps and hoods are perfect, like brand new. The set was stripped years ago by the bloke's son to make a fixie. It came off a Bottecchia of all things!

    He was so lazy he didnt even remove the shifters from the handlebars. He simply undid the 1" stem, cut the cables and housings and slipped the whole unit off. When I removed the shifters I even got a good condition set of bar gels that I dutifully used. Now I have a spare Cinelli bar and stem.

    I have only been back to work this week. The commute is silky, buttery smooth. It really does feel like a brand new bike. I cant speak highly enough for steel bikes. I would go as far to say, unless you are an elite competitor, a decent steel bike is would suit most people. The ride quality is so good. I reckon the industry as a whole scammed the public with plastic bikes, but we allowed it, devouring their latest and greatest offerings.

    Steel has everything.

    By the way, I didnt find that Colnago master piu while in Italy but I'm still itching. Just don't tell the missus.

    My commuter is going great. What surprises me is what times it is putting in. One of my favourite segments on my commute is a 17.7 km drag on the M2 with gentle rollers accumulating 145 metres gain.

    This old steel frame has quickly put in three of my top four best times, all within six weeks.

    I dont really know why.

    Is the setup more aero? Maybe but it feels the same.
    Does the frame waste less power? It feels comfortable & compliant.
    Does the perceived comfort allow me to go harder? Maybe.
    Is this all a placebo effect? Maybe.
    All of the above? Maybe.

    Anyway, why am I writing this diatribe?

    In my September post I wrote a few comments that I truly believe yet I also knew was somewhat controversial.

    For everyone except elite competitors, are plastic bikes and all the modern gizmos a scam?

  16. A "scam". No. Not by any definition of the word.

    Carbon fiber is easily capable of being tuned to give a lively ride, a compliant ride, an ultra-stiff ride or a good mix of all of those characteristics. It can also yield a frame that is torsionally very rigid. It can be manufactured to be more aerodynamic than steel, aluminum or titanium. It can be made lighter than steel with complete carbon fiber bikes coming in under ten pounds available at your local Trek dealer if you have the money and desire.

    I do agree with you that steel (and titanium) are the most durable materials for a bicycle frame and that steel, in most cases, offers the best option as far as repairability goes. The rest of your list can easily be matched or exceeded by other materials.

    Comfort: I've had steel bikes that rode like gas pipe 'thudders' (Columbus Cromor, in particular, was a very dead tube set used in two frames I owned and raced). Titanium, in my experience, is a very comfortable material to design a bike frame with. Without losing all semblance of liveliness it can be engineered to soak up tons of bumps and road imperfections and makes a great all-day bike. By the same token, designing a comfortable carbon frame that still exhibits sufficient stiffness to win World Tour events has become ridiculously commonplace.

    Speed: ??? All frame materials are 'fast'. Given a good motor, reasonable aero shaping and angles for good handling any and all of the common frame materials could still be competitive at any level including the professionals.

    Reliable: The word can mean something close to "durability", but if used to describe something like the day-to-day requirements of an average fit guy out ride 30-75 miles maybe 3 to 5 times a week...my low-end carbon frames have managed to do everything my steel and titanium ones did...including break. Yes, I've broken both steel and carbon frames and I can tell you story after story from back in the glory days of steel frame of friends, team mates and competitors that had steel crack, split, come un-brazed and just plain fail. It wasn't a time of all drippy Italian paint jobs and chipping decals...

    Style: That's in the eye of the beholder and frankly, there's plenty of fugly steel bikes out there. Overall, I've found eye-pleasing designs in all frame materials, save for wood. I just find it (personally) unsuitable in the styling department.

    Bling: Again, as much as I love chrome Nervex Professional lugs, chrome Campy bolt-on pump umbrellas, a chrome Campy double-tunnel, stainless steel spiral wound Campy rear derailleur cable housing, polished Cinelli articles, black anodized track pedals and pantographed EVERYTHING tossed on a chromed up Colnago Profile CX with indented tubing and a 12-step paint job clear-coated to an optical depth of 4"...again, however cool I believe it to be, is not everyone's idea of bling.

    Today, bling is dead sexy UD carbon, flowing aero joinery, minimalism in materials usage, electronic function with internal wiring (we used to call it "sano" back in the 1960's for a sanitary build of a car or hobby project), matte mixed with gloss, high-vis paint schemes, black components or painted ones have replaced the anodized and polish aluminum ones I used to buy. Stainless polished spokes have given way to black featureless ones that do not flash in the sun like my old DT's did. Today's bling probably does include documenting every minor and major technical feature of a frame with its own decal or set of decals. Even serial numbers now have devolved into some sort of bar code decal, but this reflects the younger generation of designers' builders' and customers' definition of what is showy I guess.

    One thing that is not mentioned much is the weight comparison to the average steel frame and fork and even an inexpensive carbon frame and fork. I live in some fairly steep terrain, do a bit of climbing and I really appreciate the weight drop afforded by going to carbon fiber construction. As you said, maybe it's a placebo effect, but I'll take the dragging 3 to 7 pounds less up every of the many climbs I do in a ride as the biggest sales factor in my bike buying priorities. I deem it an advantage and I'll only level the playing field in playing 'keep up with the carbon equipped Joneses', but I'll take it any way I can get it. A flatlander probably will not see the need as greatly, obviously.

    I still have a couple rooms stacked full of my well used and well liked steel and titanium bicycles and only four carbon bikes. I've was on steel starting in 1972 and have only been on carbon since only 2007, but with its known characteristics and perceived faults I seriously doubt that I ever return to riding steel bikes. I'm 61 and have been training and racing for 43 years. They had better hurry up if they want to get me another frame material...I ain't got that much time left!

    Just my 2 cents worth and take it for what it cost you.

  18. Wood is a perfect material for a rocking chair. I'm maybe what? ...three or four bikes at the most from the Sunnyside Home For Retired Roadies and that's only if I don't make it as a subject post in the "Is Road Cycling Dangerous?" thread or my wife finds the combination to the gun safe.

    Say...you know a carbon rocker does have plenty of bling and I'm thinking it will give me an edge in those Rock-a-thon sprints.

    This one is by an Eyetalyun designatore. Good use of naked carbon and fast color. Probably a fast handler for geriatrics with decent hip structure. Hmmm...no shooting rest or beer holder though. What are those red things down in the lower legs? Zertz?!? Must be a Roubaix model for rough hewn decks!
