I will say that I don't shop at thrift stores, even though you can find some great stuff there. Those places are intended for the poor, not for people who can afford to shop elsewhere.
Really? I thought the idea was the money collected went to whatever charity. People donate stuff and it's sold and that's how they get money. I didn't know the intended customers were only supposed to shop there.

I wouldn't ever want to buy a reposessed house or car... it would just feel so WRONG to me that somebody else should suffer just so that I could get a bargain... (I don't shop in pawn stores either!)
The previous owners have already lost the house by the time you buy it from the bank.They defaulted or lost the house for whatever reason, you didn't steal the house from them. The bank can't just sit on these homes obviously. You're not hurting the previous owners at all.

I see your point. There are different kinds of thrift shops. For example, the PTA shop is intended to raise money for the PTA, so your point holds. There's also the Greater Community Fellowship shop whose stated purpose is to provide bargain clothes and other items to poor people and not to raise money.

Actually, there is no rfw. There is rfd (rec.food.drink), but it is all but dead. There is also alt.food.wine, a most admirable newsgroup, but it is outside of the Big 8 hierarchies.
