I bought a set of carbon fiber cranks on eBay. Well ... they were a bargain. They look very much like Truvativ with an aluminum spider held on with two torx bolts. Really nice carbon work , but absolutely no logos. Go figure.
When I attempted to install them the BB only goes in about 1/4" or so. A Campagnolo BB goes in further but less than half way.
I really like the way these look and I want to use them. Do I have any other options besides filing away at the taper until they fit in the appropriate amount?
Is there something I'm missing in all this, like a Swiss taper BB that everybody knows about but me?

You cannot "file" a hardened precision finished square taper so that it will ever be useful again. First because you can't file it readily but mainly because you cannot replicate the precision of the taper and spindle facets.
You get what you pay for. My quess is that is a factory second that is out of spec. I only know of two common square taper BB. Campy style and Japanese standard. If you tried both you may be out of luck. Since you don't have a company name on the crank who do you call?

I agree that they're probably factory seconds and not properly machined.
However, I recall that some of the old Suntour Superbe Pro cranks had a unique taper that required a unique bottom bracket. Could some of the old Suntour enthusiasts refresh my memory about these?
First I hesitate to disagree with you since you are ... well ... you, and I bought your book when I built my first wheel about 30? years ago. But why? This is aluminum after all. It seems to me in my naiveté that if I take some care with the filing and then torque the thing properly all the high spots will deform and the load will spread and it will work just fine for my little 30 km daily ride. Maybe I should tighten down, once, after I ride it for a while. Not optimal I know but without a precision broach or a NC milling machine ... besides at this point I don't have a lot to lose do I?

Get a spindle made for these cranks.

Take the crank and the BB to a machine shop and see what they can do.
I would say use the Campag BB(smaller taper in milllimeters) and torque to spec(about 30 ft-lbs) and go ride.
I wonder if they came from a dude called 'Carbonlord', a testy gent if I ever was abused by one.
