Ironically, the seller seems to be including an
American Classic BB that weighs 285g (?? it's
not even titanium!) which must surely cancel
out the weight savings from cutting out all that
aluminum from the cranks. I didn't know
American Classic made anything so brutally
massive. Campy high-end square taper BBs
and Shimano UN-7x were lighter than that.

Being a weight weenie is a bit foolish, but I
don't know what to make of a weight weenie
who can't count.

But he are an engineer!

I like it, especially this part:

its strength while losing about 100 grams."

It's just like Shimano to overlook such an easy way to shed weight
while retaining all the part's strength. Maybe this "wayshwing" dude
has a patent on his innovation, and they are waiting for it to
expire. :^)

eBay seller has inspired me to make a set of geodesic space frame

I gather that the Zeus 2000 where the crank
relief was drilled all the way through was a
less common variant. When it's not drilled
through, it's a bit like the typical crank relief
from those days that ran down the arm, if a
bit more so.

Drilling the crank all the way through, aside
from all the exposed surfaces for crack initiation,
significantly reduces the stiffness in certain
directions (and more bending means greater
likelihood of crack initiation).

What surprises me about the ebay drilled-out
105 cranks is that the chainrings weren't
modified. Zeus would never have let that
opportunity pass by.

what is up with the clipless pedals! If you are going to ride the
retro circus bike, you have to get some Campy quill pedals and super
cool toe clips/straps. Benotto checkerboard celotape, too -- and a
cell phone so you can call for a ride when the crank breaks. They
break even if you don't drill 'em.-- Jay Beattie.

Yep, Record Superleggeri pedals with A.L.E. chromed toeclips were on 'em
new [1]. That's Italvega's _factory_ mod too, not just the efforts of
some home drill whacko!

I saw a line of them, all sliced and pierced, at Ben Olken's Bi-Ex in
Boston and just froze, agape.

[1] this was well before aluminum toeclips. Or Benotto Celo Tape,
Italvegas had real Gaslo tape back then.

I broke four or so NR cranks. Jobst broke like a dozen. We shopped
at the same store -- Palo Alto bikes -- that had dozens of NR crank
arms on wall racks. You would just step up to the counter, hand the
shop guy the broken crank arm, and he would go to the wall and give
you the appropriate replacement. PAB did not have a 177.5 crank arm
when I went in one time in the '81 or 2 and believe it or not, I still
have a credit slip for $35. I could buy half a good tire. -- Jay

The first time I recall seeing an all Campy bike -- a Motobecane --
was in '69. Barry Wood, Phil's son, was going nuts about it. It
belonged to a music teacher subbing at our junior high. I could not
imagine being that excited about a modern bike. Back then, touching a
