I'm taking the Park Tools sponsored bicycle mechanics course at a local shop in January. I thought
that rather than potentially ruin my good bikes, that I'd like to build a bike from a frame.
I purchased a used lugged Trek 620 touring frame that I'm having resized to
135mm. I've located a set of 135mm wheels from Nashbar. My intention is to install a modern 9 speed
drivetrain. I want touring type of gearing.
I was eyeing the Sugino 46/36/26 cranks from Harris Cyclery. I would like an 11-34 rear cogset. I
with thinking of a Deore XT rear derraileur. I want to use 9 speed bar end shifters with indexing.
Can I use a mountain front derraileur, or should I go with an Ultegra or Dura ace der. for the front
triple.? Will the front indexing work, or will it have to be friction. Also, what diameter clamp
fits a trek? I'm assuming its a clamp on, bottom pull.
I'm trying to accumulate parts prior to the class. Any help would be appreciated.
