I'm pretty sure that barcons aren't indexed in the front so any f. der. is going to work. If you've
got a steel Trek, it should be a 28.6mm clamp if it isn't a braze on. If you've got the braze on
fitting, then run a triple road front derailleur.

I'm running an XTR f. der. shifting a 34/46 on my cross bike (with STI) with no problems.

The Shimano bar end shifters are not indexed for the front derailleur.

Better with the MTB derailleur. The road derailleurs are not designed for use with a 46t large
chainring.

There is no front indexing with those shifters. Only the right lever is indexed.

Left/front bar end shifters are friction, not indexed..they will work fine.

The lovely 94 XTR front derailleur on my touring bike (46-33-20) died and I replaced it with a new,
inexpensive, LX front derailleur. With the 9 speed setup, the LX works better than the old XTR did!
The current LX derailleurs work very well with a 46 big ring. The rear, which has 11-32 cogs, is
still XTR and I am using 9 spd Dura Ace bar end shifters. That also works very well. I'm sure XT, or
even LX, would also work well.
