Well worth the wait!!! I got home and was sitting around for about 2
hours until my mum was like "hey, by the way, you got something in the
post today..." well, after that I was just stuck in my room watching
defect and then riding and watching defect and riding... only wish it
had come out after exams :p hope I can still pass!! :p

Do not read any further if you have not yet seen Defect and wish to
keep it a surprise.

Rather than posting a simple "It's awesome" message (although it is
awesome) I thought I'd try and post some constructive thoughts after my
initial viewing. My DVD finally arrived yesterday and I only had time
to watch it once last night. I'm sure many more viewings will follow
after which my thoughts and impressions will change. Maybe I'll post
an update then.

I was impressed even before putting DVD in the player, the cover
artwork and design is very well done and matches the feel of the movie
perfectly. I use the word 'feel' for lack of a better term. The movie
definitely has a personality.

The comparison with U2 is inevitable so let's get that out of the way.
Just based on my 1 viewing I would say hands down Defect is the most
technical and skill-wise the most impressive of the two. However, (and
I expect this is by design) it lacks the variety of riding types and
instead focuses more on a variety of riding styles. There is much more
of a personality and more of a connection with the riders who all throw
down fantastic moves. As a unicycling enthusiast this is great but for
a non-rider (eg. if you want to show something to a friend to break the
circus stereotype) I think U2 might be more entertaining. (eg. My wife
is more impressed with someone riding down a flight of stairs vs
someone doing a crank flip, and likes to see the switch between muni,
street, freestyle and their different environments (Defect is mostly
urban) ). If you read this forum (unlike my wife 🙂 ), you will
appreciate and I would definitely recommend Defect.

The things that stick in my head that I loved:
- Mike's rail.
- Jagur.
- Kevin's bails.
- Justin's massive shifty.
- I can't put my finger on why but I really enjoyed Brian and Keatons
parts.
- Kris's rail/post ride.
- The commentaries. (These might have been my favorite part)
- Jeffs BC action (would have floored me if I hadn't seen some recent
online videos)
- Dan's flatland tricks (I'm going to have to go back and watch them in
slow motion)
- Jess's BC wheel bit.
- Joey's tall pole-pole (phone booths?).
- I remember going 'oh yeah!' to lots of other bits but now that I'm
typing I can't remember what bits they were =)

It's hard, but to give proper feedback you have to have some negatives
(and I'm stretching here):
- It would have been nice if you could play all the commentaries at
once rather than having to navigate to each one.
- This was probably a stylistic choice and dictated by the type of
riding but I enjoyed the variation in scenery that U2 has vs the mostly
urban Defect.
- A bit too much "Sac John" for my liking.
- I'm running dry on negatives here... maybe a few more bails?

After typing that out, now I can't wait to watch it again.

A HUGE thanks to Dan, the riders and everyone else who worked on the
project. It's a thing of beauty.

No, but I only ordered it after I saw u mention that u'd ordered from

Hey Everybody,

Thanks for the comments so far and i'm glad everyone is enjoying the
DVD.

James, thanks for the extensive write up and even though i'm probably
over sensitive to negative comments, they are a big help.

I'll try to reply to some of the questions and comments regarding the
video.

About the riding/locations:

Street riding is evolving and progressing at an incredible rate, so
naturally the video focuses on that (though there still is quite a bit
of muni and trials). I think that people who do ride street will see
much more variety in the locations and riding than most people. Where
as some people will just see tricks being done over different stair
sets, street riders are looking at the length, size, height, is the
rail flat/round, how steep is it, how high is it, etc... I also wanted
to focus on some of the smaller, technical street tricks that might not
be as appealing to a general audience, but would be impressive to
street riders. I think as far as urban riding goes, there is a great
variety of lines, tricks, ideas, etc.

I want every single shot, line, trick in the video to be unique in some
way to something that has been done before. This presents a huge
challenge in terms of filming trials riding and involves traveling all
over the place to find interesting lines. I think we did a good job of
that in Defect and there is a much larger variety than in U2. Ryan's
lines he does in Quebec (we filmed these 15 months ago) still blow me
away.

One of the comments I got on U1 and U2 was that there was too much
MUni, so I scaled it back a little in this video. It's much harder to
show the evolution of MUni on video, as opposed to trials and street
riding and it has been covered pretty extensively in past videos. I
still think we found some great locations and I love some of the shots
in Justin and Kris's MUni parts.

Regarding Sac John... It's odd, because everyone I previewed the video
to (all different ages) loved the comments that he makes. Maybe he
goes over better in a larger viewing audience. His comments are meant
to sort of narrate and carry the video and aren't just thrown in
randomly. I personally find them funny, but I could see how some
people could find them a bit annoying after watching the video 5 times
in one night 🙂.

About the title... Defect is a great name for the video, but it also
has a lot of meaning. I guess you can interpret it in many different
ways, but think about some of the comments throughout the video and
some of the more common ones that we receive like "where's your other
wheel" and "your bike is missing a wheel."

I love hearing any and all comments on the DVD. Please feel free to

have any questions about anything on the Defect DVD, feel free to ask.

There were so many people involved in making this production happen
besides myself. All the riders spent tons of energy and time without
asking for anything in return. Carl Hoyer and Sara Stockhousen did an
amazing job on the cover design, t-[censored] design and DVD menus. Their
were countless unicyclists who housed us along our journey's across the
US and Canada, including the Hoovers, Vincent LeMay, Sem & Teressa
Abrahams, and the Groves family!

No Dan, thank you for putting all of your time and effort into something
for the whole community. I think I speak for many, many people on here
when I say that hundreds if not thousands of riders (including myself)
have been influenced and inspired by the riding you capture and the
productions your company makes. Unicycling today wouldn't be the same
without Universe, Universe 2 and Defect, and it certainly wouldn't have
the respect it has earnt in the extreme sports community.

Dan,

Sorry if my comments came out in a negative light, they were meant to
be far from it. You have truly out done yourself and I think the
decisions you made were the right ones (eg. Less muni, as Kris explains
in the commentary the difficulty of a muni line is never truly captured
on film). It's also nice to see your response(s) and explanations for
decisions here.

I forgot to mention one of the best parts about Defect: some of the
transitions and non-unicycling shots. For example the bit where (I
think it's Ryan?) does a move in front of a clock tower and afterwards
the camera pans up and focuses on the clock as it goes in high speed.
I'm sure there are many other subtleties with the editing, riding and
style that I missed in the first viewing, which is one thing that makes
Defect so great.

Your hard work is truly appreciated.

I must say that I like the music, also. I'm not into rap at all (I hate
it with a passion, actually) but I have liked all the rap that is in
both Universe 2 and Defect. I'm not sure if this is because of the
unicycling that accompanies it, or if it's because it's not mainstream,
but I'm liking it. Also, I noticed a lot of times (kaori's part, for
one), where the riding was synchronized to the music. I've tried to do
that in a little movie I made, and it was pretty challenging, so I
appreciate the effort that went into doing it in such a big movie as
this.

The best song was either "Paging Mr. Bronson" or the one on zach's
part.

Yeah, well done all around Dan! I loved it!!

I love how every shot is composed and how there's lots of new and
unique tricks. I was FLOORED watching your section, especially by about
the 5th time watching it in slow motion, then going out and trying some
of it, it's so hard!
I loved all the sections and all the music, and zack's was really one
of my faves, the music included.

The intro music really gets you pumped too, and that gliding shot with
the cool sounds rocks!

I LOVED sac john, he was SO funny, his commentary too. It's great that
sometimes people who come across as really weird/creepy at first can be
that interesting 😄

Great job, and keep up the great work!
