Mitochondrial myopathy? Somehow Greg finds a diagnoses of an
exceptionally rare disease, and retires IMMEDIATELY.
And interestingly enough, he never discusses this disease afterwards
nor does he appear to have suffered any obvious effects beyond not
being able to compete at the pro level anymore.
Perhasps Lemond is more confident that his past is buried a bit better
than Armstrong's?

Mitochondrial myopathy can only be diagnosed via a muscle biopsy. This was
done on Lemond at the University of Minnesota , IIRC, and the biopsy
confirmed that diagnosis. His treating physician, a woman whose name I
don't recall, confirmed the diagnosis in a press conference. The disease is
apparently a non-issue unless you're competing at the highest levels of
cycling.

Seek and ye shall find. I prefered Hinault's declarations that he
"abandoned" (as opposed to being dropped).
