  1. The Rebellin exclusion from the Worlds was about the worst example of
pettifogging pusillanimous officialdom adhering to obscure rules that nobody
gives a hoot about anyway just to prove they're in charge.

Davey decided that he'll never again take out a license for any UCI affiliate.

Davey ain't gonna support [censored] who pull stunts like that when they bend the
rules every which way when it suits their purpose.

He's gonna get himself a UFOLEP license next year and screw the UCI. They were
always a bunch of [censored] anyway.

I suppose times do change, but in Davey's day, the starter might have dropped
the flag, but not a rider in the bunch would have moved off the start line
until Rebellin was lined up and ready to go.

    I disagree. Rebillin screwed up.
Why should he ride for Argentina? Give me a break.
The Italians screwed up. Rebellin HAD to be on their team; to
not have included him was completely asinine.

Ken you really need to step back, take a deep breath, and stop attacking
everybody. I don't think that anyone has any questions about Davey's
credentials other than exactly who he is. I'd put him and Benjo in the same
class as to knowing cycling's past. Benjo is more academic, Davey has that
authentic been there done that in person feel.
Yeah, he's got strong opinions, who doesn't that sticks around here? He adds
at least as much as anybody else, and a whole hell of a lot more than most,
    including me.

Why shouldn't he ride for Argentina if he qualifies to do so ? I'd have
loved to seen him give the Italian selectors an arndt if he had managed to
    win.

Guido has a US license with UCI, but he raced for Italy in the World's.
Davide has an Italian license and Argentine citizenship.
Simoni is considering becoming Swiss citizen.
The whole thing is getting farsical.

In the UCI rulebook nationality isn't well defined though it makes
    reference to the concept.

As far as I know one can get a license in pretty much any country,
though the rule says you have to reside there. Different national
feds. may have different provisions though.

I have a cdn. UCI "elite" license and no one ever asked to see proof
of citizenship or residence. I'm sure I could ride the Nationals with
no other paperwork, I don't know about the Worlds though.

i don't know who davey is but I could probably find out, in fact he
might be a good speaker at our club's dinner.

in the toronto area there's a number of old brits who raced back in
the day. the fact that he still rides narrows it down.

Anyone know the origin of "pettifogging"? I'm assuming French
    "petit-something"

Easy to find the origins in general. Oriiginally a reference to
lawyers that worked to death minor cases. The petit is like you
indicated and the fogger is obscure.

Predated Charles Dickens - absent Google, that would have been my
    guess at the origin.

    Curtis L. Russell
    Odenton, MD (USA)
    Just someone on two wheels...

  17. Google now has a "definition" link to the right of the page (in the blue bar). Very useful. Am
Her Dic and Webster's. And others.

"Pettifogger is formed from the English words petty and fogger, of unknown origin. It has been
suggested that the obsolete word fogger was associated with Fugger, surname of a 15th and 16th
century German family of monopolistic merchants. But the word pettifactor, which carries the same
meaning of pettifogger, seems to negate this explanation. In pettifactor, the factor means "one who
acts as an agent, deputy, or representative" (from Latin facere, to make, to do)."

    Kirby.

    Quoted post said:

A "pettifogger" was originally an attorney who made a practice of taking on (and often inciting) meritless cases and pursuing them through chicanery and duplicity.

    ...

The origins of "pettifogger," which dates back to the 16th century, are only half-clear. The "petti" element is the familiar "petty," meaning "trivial or inconsequential." But while we might assume that the "fogger" element refers to the clouds of obfuscation emitted by a "pettifogger," there is no verifiable connection to "fog" in that sense. "Fogger" may be derived from the Middle Dutch "voeger," meaning "arranger or fixer."

Another interesting possibility is that "fogger" is a derivative of "Fugger," the name of a famous 15th century German banking family. Apparently the Fugger name thereafter became a noun in several European languages meaning, variously, "wealthy man," "monopolist," and, a bit more sardonically, "usurer" and "huckster." Ironically, if this theory is true, it's a few hundred years too late for the Fuggers to sue for defamation.
