I thought I would post a link to a "car park" in the industrial outskirts of Ludwigshafen on the middle Rhein, on my 2006 cycling tour in May June this year. This was actually the second photo I took -- the first one only had about 30 or so bikes on it then I cycled another 100 metres!!!!!........................... http://www.tapan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/A_lot_more_bikes.JPG
At a rough estimate there are about 15 cars in the background ------ but how many bikes? And they were clearly all in use!

Ludwigshafen? That sounds like chemical industry. On many of these large chemical production sites the workers use bikes to get from A to B. Maybe the company also offered these bikes for private use. Apart from that commuting by car is very common in Germany - and until recently it has even been subsidised by the state.
