  1. I thought I would post a link to a "car park" in the industrial outskirts of
Ludwigshafen on the middle Rhein, on my 2006 cycling tour in May June this
year. This was actually the second photo I took -- the first one only had
about 30 or so bikes on it then I cycled another 100
    metres!!!!!...........................

At a rough estimate there are about 15 cars in the background ------ but how
many bikes? And they were clearly all in use!

    A lot of bikes.
I think you have found a critical mass storage depot.

Curious - many of them appear to be almost strictly identical.

All the same model. Was it a bike factory?

Fantastic. I rather like this picture of a bike park in Amsterdam:

Except the Post office bikes are yellow in Germany! Presumably that factory
( don't know what it was) gave all its workers a bike for free!

Ludwigshafen? That sounds like chemical industry. On many of these large
chemical production sites the workers use bikes to get from A to B. Maybe
the company also offered these bikes for private use. Apart from that
commuting by car is very common in Germany - and until recently it has even
    been subsidised by the state.
