Cornering question

  1. I went to a women's cycling clinic this weekend where we spent some time
    doing cornering drills. Cornering has always been a weakness of mine and no
    one has ever really "taught" me how to corner. I noticed that in initiating
    the turn, I push down on my inside hand, which seems to tip the bike into
    the turn. When I asked the coach about this, he stated that pushing down on
    the inside hand was "old school" turning and that he recommended pulling up
    on the outside hand (outside leg is down and weighted in both styles). I
    tried his way, which felt really awkward and sort of naturally gravitated
    back to my "old school way". With the other pointers that he taught us, my
    cornering improved dramatically and I felt really confident in the turns.
    Later, another woman asked him about countersteering, which he said was what
    I was doing by pushing down on my inside hand and that he could teach her
    about it later. So what is the right way to weight the bars, or not? And
    is there a consensus on a new, improved way to corner?

    Are you sure you heard right? Countersteering is pushing *down* on the
    *outside* hand, then leaning your bike (and body) to the inside. Davis Phinney
    (former Tour de France racer) and others have been writing about this technique
    since at least the 1980s. Motorcyclists have been using countersteering,
    probably since motorcycles were invented.

    Yes, I am sure I heard right. I am sure that I push on the inside hand and
    the coach said that it was countersteering. If you push down on the
    outside hand, how does that help you get your bike to the inside? And this
    coach said DO NOT lean your body, only your bike.

    Well, after reading about pushing down on the outside hand, I tried it,
    and found that it seemed to help. But it's not very natural to me, and so
    I don't tend to do it regularly.

    On the other hand, it is nonsense to try to not lean your body into a
    turn. The only way you will turn is with the plane determined by your
    center of mass and the tires in line with the net force direction.
    Otherwise you will fall over. This is also true when riding in a straight
    line. What the coach is suggesting really is to lean the bike over
    further than it needs to be, which is not a good idea.

    Countersteering is pressing on the inside hand. To go left you press left.
    To go right you press right. It's called countersteering because you are
    pointing the front wheel in the direction which is counter to the one you
    wish to go.

    As usual, Sheldon Brown covers this topic. See countersteering here:

    countersteering as we all do it for all but very slow speed turns. It comes
    so naturally (once we learned to ride a bike) that we don't consciously
    realize that we're doing it. It is helpful, however, to understand it.

    and found that it seemed to help. But it's not very natural to me, and so

    It doesn't seem counter-intuitive at all, in fact, it just happened that
    way. What I was wondering was, is it right or wrong, or is there a newer,
    better way like he implied? And I think the counter-steer article is
    correct, you really are pushing forward, since your hands are in the drops.

    Actually, most of the ones I read indicate that you push forward and down on
    the inside hand, as I was doing, not the opposite, or outside hand.

    No, I think you describe what I was doing. My hands were in the drops, and
    to turn right, I would put pressure down (and forward I guess because I am
    in the drops) on the right (or inside) hand.

    It doesn't seem counter-intuitive at all, in fact, it just happened that
    way. What I was wondering was, is it right or wrong, or is there a newer,
    better way like he implied? And I think the counter-steer article is
    correct, you really are pushing forward, since your hands are in the drops.

    I think the idea of a "newer better" way of cornering is pretty far
    fetched. People have known everything practical there is to know about
    balancing or cornering bikes for roughly 100 years. We have no new
    physics, no new knowledge - we just have a (relatively) new Internet to
    talk about the same old stuff.

    While in a turn, you center of mass (body + bike) will have to be leaned
    over at a certain angle. Depending on your speed and the radius of your
    turn, there's only one possible angle. This is fundamental physics, and
    nothing you can do will change that. Leaning the body more or less than
    the bike does nothing practical and doesn't change cornering speed. (It
    will put worse side loads on your wheels, though. Wheel side loads are
    zero if your body stays in the plane of the bike.)

    Countersteering is the fastest way to get into that necessary lean
    angle. I wouldn't describe it as pushing _down_. Instead, it's
    physically turning the handlebars - just for a moment - in a direction
    opposite the way you're going to turn. It's a backwards _steering_ motion.

    When you physically steer right, the bottom of your tires move right.
    Your body's inertia makes your body go straight. The result is a
    leftward lean. After steering right for about 0.2 seconds, you'll
    automatically correct by steering left, but by this time you'll be
    leaning left and turning left.

    You can demonstrate this by balancing a broom, brushy side high, on your
    hand. "Steer" your broom handle right (move your hand right). The
    broom tips left. If you're coordinated enough, you can very quickly
    follow the broom left. That's what a countersteered fast turn is like.

    Countersteering and rapid turning is a good thing to practice
    (carefully) in a big empty parking lot. It's good to know as an
    emergency maneuver on the road, not only as a racing move.

    No, you didn't miss anything. You are correct.

    Everyone, read Frank's explanation. It is the clearest, and makes the most
    sense. Your body is heavy, and wants to go in a straight line. Your bike
    is light, and responds to steering input by tilting under your body. If you
    want to turn left, you need to lean left, but you have no way of pushing
    your body over. So you push the bike over in a way that produces a leftward
    lean. This is "countersteering."

    What I don't understand is why everyone talks about pushing *down* on one
    side or the other. Don't you really push *forward?* The lean doesn't come
    from downward force--it comes from steering the bottom of the bike away from
    the turn. Once you have a lean, and you keep the bike balanced, you are
    turning.

    As long as you brought it up .... I don't understand why folks keep
    insisting that a lower center of gravity is better on a bike. You can
    balance a broom (as the above example) easily when the brush is on the top.
    If you reverse it, brush on the bottom, then it becomes very, very hard to
    balance. Would not the same apply to balancing a bike?

    My experience is that the low center of gravity seems (as in
    subjective) better when all is well. It seems to track better. I
    really like the way my recumbent tracks around smooth corners, for
    instance.

    What is real is that if something goes wrong, I usually recovered on
    the (higher COG) diamond frames and I recover a lot less of the time
    on a low COG recumbent. Surprise issues, like catching sand or ice
    with the rear wheel, and I end up on my butt.

    I know by experience that learning to ride an antique high wheeler is
    amazingly easy, once you're up there. Those bikes can be effortlessly
    balanced at 2 or 3 mph.

    OTOH, when I first tried to balance a recumbent, I looked ridiculously
    clumsy. Faster tipping due to low COG, and (on that model) longer
    wheelbase made balancing tricky.

    With standard geometry, the COG height really doesn't vary much. My
    guess is that a low COG would allow faster initiation of turns for crit
    or track sprint work, but that you'd soon run into pedal scrapes if you
    went too low.

    And picking up on that idea, I think bottom bracket height is more
    imporatant for clearance than for COG. For example, mountain bikers and
    cyclocrossers prefer to clear logs, not bend chainrings. Touring bikes
    often feature lower bottom brackets (thus lower COGs) but I bet it's
    more so you can reach the ground easier when seated and stopped at a
    light, or get better crotch clearance when standing over the bike. And
    tourists don't worry about scraping pedals, because they won't pedal
    corners during fast cornering.
