  1. Hello,
As someone who regularly gets heated messages from group (list) members
about my own postings, maybe someone can explain why talking for hours on
end about mobile telephones can be related to sensible cycling questions?
I cannot for the life of me understand why mobiles used by car drivers and
lack of helmet use can be turned into such lengthy-I was going to say
debate-but that makes it sound sensible, which of course in my own view it
    is not.
If as I am led to believe, this list is about cycles and cycling and to help
others, why not have long debates that make at least some sort of sense?
After all we all supposedly ride cycles because we enjoy them/it, and not
because we cannot drive a car?
I own a car and its a Volvo, but fail to see why this also gets me messages
of ridicule. You should see the wide berth I give cyclists on the road when
    I am driving my car!
I do believe in live and let live, but sometimes I shudder to think what
some of you on here do with your lives. I do hope that new viewers if that
is the correct term can be helped not hindered by some of the inane and
    futile talk on here.
    Best regards,
    John.

Other than advertisements, and the occasional post defending your actions,
have you ever posted anything to the group? The group is about much more
than just debate, what about advice? Ride reports? Reviews?

Well, there's your problem: your view is dramatically different from
quite a few other people's. Helmet use, if made compulsory in the UK
(which you seem to think is a good idea) stands a very good chance of
damaging the nation's public health by reducing cycling. And what
evidence do I have for this? The evidence that that is just what *has
happened* everywhere such laws have been introduced.

This is a serious matter and directly concerns cycling and cyclists, so
it's ripe for discussion. That it comes up so often is because people
keep on popping up and starting in the same old places again and again
and since it really is important (actually a matter of life and death)
it is felt necessary by some, me amongst them, to retread the same
material /again/. I'd very much like not to, but it's too important to
    let it go.

My last car was a 740GL, nobody ridiculed me about it. Guy Chapman,
IIRC, drives a V70. I don't think he gets too much abuse about it, so
you can move driving and Volvos off the list of things that generate
problematical feedback. Perhaps there's something else causing it?

The tabloid journalist approach. Instead of discussing the issues,
    discuss the people. No thanks.

Many have indeed been helped by the "inane and futile talk". They
have for instance understood the helmet issue better.

  8. Hi,
All my bike interests and family too are on my webpages. I get approx 200
    hits daily Worldwide.
I will endevour to waste time and effort in the future to report on my
rides. What can one say about a 30 mile ride amongst beautiful countryside
along muddy lanes overtaken on occasion by cars and other 'cyclists'?
Ah well I will give it a go.

  12. Hello, How many bikes to people own. I mean how many used by one person
alone, not family bikes in total? I have (lested below)
Moulton F frame (one off Stowaway special 4 speed)
    Moulton F frame
    Brompton T 6
    Brompton L 6 (SP)
    Microluxe 5 speed
    Dawes One Down Tourer
I have owned amongst others too many to mention
Colnago, Pinerello,Nigel Dean,Witcombe,Dawes Galaxy, Moulton AM (a number),
Thorn Nomad, Gianmt Terrago, Giant Tourer, Birdy Red, Birdy Blue and so it
    goes on..
Most times I have sold my bikes because of my back injuries which sometimes
become so bad that I feel I will never ride again. Having bikes in the home
when faced with this is very depressing so I get rid of them. Most tiimes
having regreted my actions and when feeling more strength I start replacing,
and so the cycle (pun?) goes.
I love camping and very often go off all year round mainly by car nowadays
or sometimes by train with a Brompton or such. I can enjoy outdoors anytime
of year, rain, shine or whatever.
My feeling is that I have too little life to do all I sshould like, so I
    concentrate on cycles and cycling.
My wife says I live , dream all the time about bikes. So what?
Time for others to make a list.
John. A PS more can be seen of me and my life as previously mentioned, on
    my webpages.

Hmm, at the moment I have:
    EBC Tourer (rebadged Dawes Horizon)
    Gary Fisher 29er MTB
Brompton T5 --- though at the moment it's been regraded to an L3 until I
can get the SA 5-speed hub fixed. Maybe it'll become an T8 or L8 when
the SA 8-speed for Bromptons become available---probably with a SON XS
just to make it ridiculously over the top.
    Dutch Speed bike home-built recumbent.
Two frames waiting to be turned into other things. One's becoming a
fixed, the other might become a limited gear (just a rear cassette or
maybe a hub gear) hack bike.

I seem to remember John looking for and trying a recumbent trike
    (Pashley?) some time ago.

He sold it! (I assume it didn't suit him.)

Not a PDQubed, IIRC, but of course there are lots of different styles
which seat the rider quite differently to that, so ruling them all out
from one bad experience may be premature. Perhaps a trip to D-Tek for a
larger range to try out rather than sizing things up just on paper might
    be a Cunning Plan.
