I already did, but I am not the only one he winds up. Last time out I
seem to recall it was someone else who put their head above the

aggressively) for John to either pull up a chair and sit down, or push
off. I often think of urc as being a bit like a bicycle-themed pub.
People talk about lots of stuff, mostly bikes, and occasionally sell
each other some stuff. John is perhaps the equivalent of the
Watchtower seller on a Friday night ;-)

There are a fair few who have made heated comments about John. Mine

I own three bikes at the moment:

My most used machine is a Raliegh Vitesse frame (nothing special -
CrMo frame) equipped with poor-man's STI (Sora), and my new SON. This
is typicallly the going-to-work/shops bike.

Least used is the Peugeot Performance 2000 (nothing special - CrMo
frame) which I bought 8 or 9 years ago. It is equipped with el-cheapo
Sachs bits and no-name-pretend-to-be-aero hubs/rims. It sees very
limited use since my commuting bike above is actually much nicer to
use. It will almost certainly become either a donor-bike or will
become the recipient of some spare STI shifters. When I start my new
job (waiting waiting waiting) it may get used a little more.

Most loved bike is my Giant Tourer, which started off a a hybrid
(nothing special - CrMo frame. Spot a theme here?). It probably sees
daylight a couple of times a year when it gets loaded up with
ridicuous amounts of camping kit and taken on holiday for a couple of
weeks at a time. 'Twas on this machine that I did my end-to-end

I'm currently in a dilemna: Brompton Folder or Eb Trumpet?

I'll be able to resist taking all the nice bits off the Fort and having this
as my main bike. Cannot wait to ride it! Will post pics.

Don't know what will happen to the Fort -- may sell the frame and fork. May
keep it. Shame really, but something has to give. The Spesh will get more
use over winter and early season Audaxes if the Fort goes. Only thing is it
needs new wheels as the ones it has are HORRIBLE.

vandals when left parked outside overnight.
2) 10-speed mixte framed Raleigh Sprite 1978-1981. Stolen Valentines
weekend from Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
3) Claude Butler Majestique 1981-1985. Stolen from Russells Hall
Hospital the week I passed my driving test.
4) Eclipse Countryman mixte 1985-1993. Sold to a good home.
5) Cheltenham Pedersen 1985 to date. Shame I can't ride it...
6) Specalized Rockhopper 1986-1989. Stolen from Sauchiehall Street in my
first week in Glasgow.
7) Fisher AL-1 1989-1998. Sold to Myra.
8) Kuwahara Pacer hybrid 1989-2001. Sold to good home.
9) Flying Scot light touring bike 1991-2002. Frame buckled 1995 &
rebuilt/resprayed. Given to David, who later moved in...
10) Brompton T3 1993-2001. On permanent loan to young nephew.
11) Orbit Harrier 1995-2002. Given to David.

I think I used Nos 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 in DATC events in 1996...

BSA single speed roadster. My first proper bike. Daily transport through
my teens until I bought a car (I know. I'm sorry, alright?). Victim of
many pilot error crashes on and off road. T-boned by a car (I suffered

Raleigh Zenith(?) 10 speed light tourer, 501 frame. Bought to get fit after

decent road tyres and dynamo lighting it does the job. I'd replace it with
a Halford Subway 8 but its modest price looks high set against my hack's
annual consumption of chains and cables.

Thorn Brevet. My current Best Bike, summer commuter, weekend tripper.
Bought for a 40th birthday LEJOG (OK, it took more than the actual day
itself). A joy to ride, every ride.

Triumph 3 speed roadster. Discovered in the garage when we moved into our
currrent house. Ideal for nipping to the shops. Crisis commuter when the
others are out of commission. Not much used now, really ratty, needs the
back hub building to a new rim, but too good to throw away.

Looking this over, it isn't a list of bikes. It's a slice of my life.

Complete bikes

Giant OCR 3T ('03 model) w/ 105 groupset. My "proper" racer which is
still a joy to ride. Compared to the others this goes like [censored] off a
stick and has covered a far few miles in the 16 months I've owned it.

Random old road bike (branded "Hugh Porter", "Veloce Tentura"😉. Bought
from the Bike Station in Edinburgh for a princely £7 and converted to a
fixer at far greater cost than necessary! Now the chainline is sorted it
rides beautifully, although I discovered last night that I hadn't
tightened the wheel bolts up as much as I should after adjusting the
chain tension, when I cranked it hard at a set of lights and wrenched
the wheel forward so that it rubbed the left chainstay. Since I was
currently racing a refuse truck who had stopped in the ASL box (Brief
"debate" with driver followed), I had to sprint up a hill while fully
expecting the rear tyre to go bang.

Hooves Of Destiny (As it has become known). A homebuilt SWB recumbent
made from 2mm gauge 1" box section mild steel. Rides pretty well for a
narrow tubed (Not particuarly stiff) frame which was mostly aligned by
eye. Suffers from a slghtly angled bottom bracket which does make long
rides uncomfortable. Is currently having a new frame built with (gasp)
sliding boom and "Oversize" tubes which should improve the ride no end.
Especially as the new frame is being built on a jig which means it may
even end up straight!

Frames

I have a large (Haven't measured it) Claud Butler road frame (~70s era I
think) which was a restoration project until I got sidetracked by
recumbents. I'm still trying to find a use for it (That doesn't involve
hacking it up), any interested parties?

Previous bikes

I have owned two road bikes prior to the Giant and remember having
something else once but I don't remember what. The first one was red and
had cottered cranks (The only two things that stuck in my memory). The
second was a Claud Butler Electron which I got as a gift from a friend
and which had successive upgrades which took it from a 10 speed, to a
105 (Except STIs which were RSX) equipped beast. I gave it back to the
original owner when I bought the Giant and he has since restored it to a
decent working order and is thinking of setting it up as an Audax bike.

Future projects

Trike, trike, trike. He he. After correspondance with other homebuilders
and riding of a Several of Trices, I'm in the planning stages for a
racing trike. The plan was for mild steel or T45 tubing (Depending on
costs / availability), but in light of some recent browsing, I'm
currently considering carbon fibre. If I manage to get it built, expect
reports of a fast low thing which promptly exploded. ;-)

I'm also considering asking the neighbours if I can build a shed in the
shared garden area of my flat, as I am already having to store a bike at
work and have no idea where I could keep a trike!

One thing that might help is maintaining a consistent identity. It seems

Yes, a lot of u.r.c is inane. A lot of it is also relevant. As others
have mentioned, it's a bit like a group of like-minded individuals in a
pub. While all interested in cycling, it's not all we talk about, and
the habit of threads going rapidly OT is remarkably similar to real-life
conversation.

Prefacing your infrequent posts advertising items for sale with "FS:" or
"FA:" would probably help, as would including more information rather
than insisting that people visit your websit, which is somewhat anti-
social (I was referring to the practice, but the same might be said
about the site itself! ;-) ).

But I've not said anything here that hasn't already been said on the
numerous other occasions that you've complained about your treatment
here, so I see no reason to suppose that you'll take it on board this
time.
