  1. Anybody ever hear of this 'comino' seed or is it a typo for cumin seed?

I suppose i should just not send this to the group but i thought i would
google 'comino seed' before doing so, and it turns out its just another
term for cumin. Might even be that comino seed when ground is cumin
    powder?

"Comino" is the Spanish word for cumin.

Yep, it's cumin. Just a hint: coriander leaves are the same as cilantro. I
can't stand cilantro. It's that genetic thing. Tastes like soap to me.

*However*, if ya don't already know, coriander seed tastes nothing like
    cilantro.

Seconded. I'm told it's an acquired taste, but after a few years of
practice, I still can't get with it.

I have tried and tried to like cilantro .. but I just can't.
I like the idea of it ... but nothing else.
I agree, it tastes like soap to me as well.

Your question has been answered, so, there's absolutely no need for me to
    post a reply to it.

Take care, be well, have fun.

It tastes better chopped & cooked in something. Carrot and coriander
soup is delicious and really easy to make:

Fry a chopped onion, add 1lb carrots & pint of stock, boil, add chopped
coriander & blend (I use a hand blender). Yum!

I don't care for it because it tastes the way raw sewage
smells, to me. I never got the soap thing. I can eat
cilantro if it's in something and there's not too much
of it, but I hardly ever use it when I cook, I just leave
    it out of the recipe.

Speaking of things tasting like soap, at a recent wedding
reception I attended there were small souvenirs at each
place setting. 2 little heart-shaped things, 1 pink, 1 green,
about 2" across, that I assumed were candy. One of my table
mates assumed the same thing. He took a bite of one and
swallowed it and turned to his wife and said, "This tastes
like soap." He handed it to her and she took a tiny nibble
and said, "It *is* soap!" So, sometimes when you eat something
that tastes like soap, it really *is* soap. ;-)

I used to feel the same way about ginger. It tasted to me like
dishwashing soap smells, then one day i was eating at a Vietnamese
restaurant i had specifically asked them not to put any ginger in the
food i was ordering and of course it came to table with enough to make
me a convert. Now i use it in my own cooking.

The genes for that must have strange characteristics because I love
cilantro, my dad did, my mom likes it, and so does my brother, but my
sister *hates* it. Back to the tastes like soap. I've always been curious
as to how the genetic connection works (without having any doubt that there
    *is* a genetic connection).

I can agree, btw, that there is a taste with cilantro that one could easily
label as soapy. I can't get enough of that taste, especially when paired
with chile peppers and/or powder which, particularly in certain varieties,
also have a somewhat soapy taste. And I know that some people are similarly
averse to both bell peppers and chile peppers, again as I understand it for
genetic reasons. Could the underlying cause be a connection in similar
substances in the 2 foods? (Pity an individual with bad reactions to this
    in Mexico)

Oh, and another alias for a well-known spice - Canela is a term sometimes
used for cinnamon. Most of the time I've seen it in connection with Ceylon
    cinnamon, IMHO the better variety.

My first encounter with cilantro is something that always makes me smile.
I had never tasted it before when I bought a bunch for a recipe I wanted to
make. Thinking it much like parsley, when I got it home from the store I
proceeded to wash it, spin dry it, and bag it for the refrigerator. In the
process I must have bruised a bit of it and released the pungent fragrance,
so decided to taste it. Ptooey!!! I didn't think it tasted like soap...I
thought it tasted spoiled! I immediately tossed it in the trash bin and
substituted parsley in the recipe. A year or two later I ordered a dish in
a Mexican restaurant that was liberally garnished with fresh cilantro. It
was instant love at first taste! I hadn't realized it was really supposed
    to taste like that. :-)
