usually taking three injections a day of regular, and one
in the evening of Lantus.
I have to have a diet of nothing but clear liquids the day
before, so I'm planning to take only the Lantus, drink diet
soda or broth or water if the sugars are normal, and apple
or grape juice if they start getting too low. Anybody have
any advice or suggestions?
Peggy
The last time I had major surgery (total hip
replacement), my insulin requirements doubled despite a
drastic reduction in my carb intake.
My experiences with surgery suggest that you would best be
suited by testing often and injecting small doses as often
as needed. I more than doubled my daily quota of injections
to handle my sugars that first week.
You won't have as much trouble as I did; Colonoscopy is
about the equivalent of minor surgery. No cutting, less
trauma, but lots and lots and lots of stress. Stress of that
sort is more than sufficient to drive your sugars wild.
I would urge you to be flexible in your insulin regime. My
regime is:
How much do I shoot? As much as I need on any given day.
How often do I shoot? As often as I need to on any
given day.
At the beginning of the day, I never know how much or how
often I will inject. I have tested 12 times and injected 12
times on a bad day.
You have at least one and perhaps two "bad days" scheduled.
