Clicky cranks.

That's quite a sig.

Anyhoo, check that your chainring bolts are tight. It has been a
sometimes overlooked culprit (on my bikes, at least), and it's easiest
to remedy.

Another possibility is a cracked frame. I think I've had clicking from crank/axle
interface, from a frame crack, from chainring bolts, and from chainrings
contacting an anti-chainsuck plate.

When you put a decent amount of force on your crank, does your chainstay pull right to
to meet it? Does a chainring hit anything? Aply the brakes, push the pedals and see how
much things flex.

Check the chainring bolt to make sure there tight. That
done and still clicking it just may be your BB. They go in many ways.
Grinding,click, free spot,wabble,cluck,and just dame frozen.

Like the others said, try the easy stuff first (chainring bolts). You
can find out if it's the chainring bolts by seeing if the click goes
away in your granny ring.

If that doesn't work, I'd suggest:

1) Remove, and thoroughly clean the bottom bracket, the cups, and the
frame's bottom bracket shell. Wrap 3-4 layers of teflon plumber's
tape around the BB cups (taking care that where the tape ends is
facing backward when you screw it in so it doesn't "unwind"😉. Slather
the BB shell with grease, grease the inside of the cups (where the BB
cartridge goes in), and grease over the teflon tape. Can you tell I
love grease). Torque the BB to its spec'd level (really, really
tight).

2) Remove, clean and regrease the pedals at the crank interface.

3) Remove, clean and regrease the rear derailleur bolt and reinstall
(this is sometimes the source of hard-to-find clicks).

4) Don't forget to check the handlebar to stem interface - that's also
a common source of clicks that often get mistaken for crank-related
(since sound travels much faster through metal, which makes it
impossible for your brain to accurately pinpoint the source). Again,
remove, clean and grease.

5) Ditto for the seatpost (easy to eliminate this as the culprit -
just stand up and pedal and see if the click goes away).

At worst, you'll end up with a bike that's better lubed!

I had a clicking/grinding appear the day I was to leave on a weekend
mtn bike trip. I took the bike into the shop and was going to go with
whatever they wanted (haste makes waste, but when a trip awaits...).
The upside was that theproblem was solved by cleaning the crank / bb
interface. Bad news is that it cost me 10$ for someone to undo two
bolts and use a rag.

(i.e. go in numerical order)

That's not a big deal. I would gladly give $10 as a tip for just finding
the problem.

It's unlikely that they solved the real cause of the click, then. Cranks
and bottom bracket spindles do not have relative movement*, especially not
one that would occur on every pedal rotation. If it were the case, your
cranks would wallow out (square taper) or the splines would be buggered up
(ISIS/Octalink) in short order.

Are you sure they didn't take out the bottom bracket completely? Did you
watch the whole process?

together same as on me old bike. Tbh it's fine with the big ring, but as
you go down it gets worse. Maybe I should invest in a decent crank.

It's probably your chain ticking against the ring(s) when you apply force.
Not unusual for it to go away when soft-pedaling.

Firstly it's a welded chainring and secondly the bike is only a year old and
not much use as it's been out of use for a while.
