  1. I know of Prime, Choice and Select, but when a stupidmarket ad says 'USDA
Inspected' (in this case USDA Inspected Grain Fed Western Beef), should I
make the assumption that it is Select?

I seriouly doubt the USDA gives a rat's ass about diet or ethnicity...

No you should make the assumption that the USDA said yes this is beef,
came from at least as far west as West Broklyn Heights, at least saw
grain before it died and it passed human consumption regulations.

Hint: These people want your money. And will do all within their power
(legally) to make you give it to them.

If it said 'USDA Inspected'Select Grain Fed Western Beef. I think it
would be safe to assume it was select.

If neither select, Prime or choice is mentioned on the labeling then it
isn't. Or it is a mis-mosh of all three (or two of them) and
    ungradeable.

Advertisers strike again! It is illegal to make claims about beef that
aren't true. So the store is safe saying it is inspected beef as in not
    somebody's pet cow.

That latin phrase 'screw the customer' (ooops wrong phrase) let the
buyer beware should apply (right phrase). Since it doesn't mention the
grade ...the meat can't have one.

The store is only willing to tell you (as per label) that a guy in a
white suit and nifty white hardhat looked at it and said...that looks
    definetly western bovinian.

    --
It's not a question of where he grips it!
It's a simple question of weight ratios!

A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut.

    Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

All I know is, if the package is marked Deselect one must read the Mad Cow
    warning on the label.

Sheldon, grow up. I am not trolling. I am asking for a clarification-or a
definition of a term. One that is listed in this week's circulars-if you
still lived on Long Island (Brentwood I believe it was), I'd refer you to
    the specific publication.
Or is it really that you cannot answer my question?
    Just cut the [censored] ok?

No. They're only saying it complies with federal meat handling laws.
Inspecting and grading are different things. Most commercial beef in the
U.S. is "finished" on grain to get some fat buildup.

The only part of the label that has legal implications is "USDA
inspected." The rest is marketing. You can;t assume any grade. There is
beef available called in the trade "no-roll" and it means that it isn't
graded. Perhaps this is what they're selling. Or it could be select or
    cutter-canner (Alpo-grade) or some other long-chewing, low-flavor grade.
    Never know.

    And grain-fed should be hyphenated.

No you shouln't, unless it says "select". In a nutshell, what USDA
inspected means that the plant, workers, and whatever the meat is, is
inspected and is safe for export to other countries and for domestic
use. An example would be "USDA free range grass fed beef", the seller
and producer have to prove that is in fact what the product is to get
certified. The same for grain or corn fed.

  9. Within the past few years supermarkets in the northeast have stopped
advertising grades. They're calling "select" grade "certified" or
Black Angus Beef and selling it at "choice" prices". Stew Leonards is
calling theirs "selected beef" and charging premium prices. It also
looks like the "choice" label has been degraded to include the higher
end of "select" meats. Select grade is one step above dog food. Some
markets sell both with similar looking labels except the choice meats
have the word on the label.

If the label doesn't state "choice" , it isn't. If the grade isn't
    stated, it's "select", or worse.

    Bob,

It's bad enough when you get into it with Sheldon in an existing
thread, but if that's what turns you on, at least it can be explained
    away to a certain extent.

However, starting a topic just to bring your venom to the attention of
everyone on rfc (and that's what a new subject is) is inexcusably
    selfish.

You might think that you're delivering a fatal wound to Sheldon by
posting his name in a subject, but you're just revealing yourself to
be a boor. RFC is a cooking group Bob, not your personal platform
    for vendettas.

And don't even try with the "But mommy, Sheldon started it!" or "Mommy
he said bad things about Italians." You're not doing much to maintain
the dignity of Italians and Italian-Americans.

Please adjust your meds. Grow up. Or get a life. Whichever applies.

Aw pshaw. Sheldon deserves anything he gets. He spends so much energy
insulting other people and then passes himself off as an expert while
giving incorrect information, except when he wisely consults a reliable
source, that he is fair game for the spleen venting of anyone who gets fed
    up with his childish [censored].

Dave didn't make that claim. As you pointed out to Bob (this one),
"Please adjust your meds. Grow up. Or get a life. Whichever applies."
But telling anyone to leave Sheldon alone is well-beyond your scope.

I think (that) Bob's anti-Sheldon posts are a helluva lot more entertaining

I assume you are using the term "we" in the Royal sense? If I didn't
like what Pastorio said, I am quite capable of telling him myself. In
this case I think Shelly got his "just desserts".
