I read the recent discussion here about checking chain wear and I tried several methods to check my Campy 10 speed chain. Campy states in their instructions the the maximum lenght for six links is 132.6 mm. My chain has about 2700 miles on it and it measured about 132.5 using accurate calipers. If I measure 12 inches using a straight edge, the chain shows hardly any wear. It is bearly 12 1/32". So, I really don't know if my chain needs to be replaced or not. Which method should I use? The chain is not making any excessive noise and the shifting is perfect.

I'm only a little confused. It seems to me that six links should measure six inches (152.4mm). I just now took a metric scale and held it next to a chain and the only thing I can figure out that might measure 132.6mm would be from the "left side" of one rivet to the "right side" of the comparable rivet six links away. Is this what you're measuring, or is 132.x above a typo?
Anyway, since chain pitch is in inches, and you'll get a better idea of wear over twelve links than over six, I'd go with the traditional method.

Just make sure you've got some tension on the chain (put it on the big ring). A 0.5 percent elongation in 12 inches is 1/16" and that is pretty easy to measure. If you've got only 1/32" you're ok. It doesn't make sense to use mm since the chain pitch is based on an inch.

152.6 millimeters = 6.00787402 inches or about 0.13 percent. That's a very low wear to replace at.
Your measured 152.5 millimeters * 2 = 12.007874 inches or about 12" and 1/128th. Did you make sure the chain was under at least some tension?

I think that I could have explained the Campagnolo method of chain measurement better. The measurement does show six links in the diagram in the manual. The Campy manual explains it better than I can. The part that refers to measurement is on page 35.
I'm puzzled. You measured your chain with two different methods and they both showed that it was still good (i.e. not greater than 132.6 mm with method 1 and less than 12 1/16" with method 2). You report that the chain looks, works, and sounds fine.
Based on this you now conclude that you should replace the chain?

left = new C10 chain right = old C10 chain after 10000 km.
If the old one is OK (less than 4 mm elongation) put the old chain back on the bike using a connex 10 speed masterlink. Keep the new chain standby and keep track of the elongation with a Rohloff chain checker. If you think it's worn do the above procedure again to make sure.

A new chain is only $34.99. Why would you want a chain that is close to the end of its usefullness?

I like this suggestion and will try it. What about the Park CC-3 chain checker? Is it as good as the Rohloff?

Nothing wrong with buying a chain and having it available. But I see no reason to rush to replace it until you have at least one measurement that shows the old one to clearly be past the wear limit (disregard if you're setting out tomorrow on a transcontinental trek).
Anyway, if the 12" ruler test shows only 1/32" of wear then the Campy test is probably unduly conservative (afterall, they won't mind at all if you buy more chains than needed). Do you know what it measured on the Campy test when new?

be confident with the campy method. most people here follow the "wooden ruler" method that is neither accurate nor takes into account roller wear.
for the record, campy's spec is pretty tight, but the dividend of early replacement is longer cassette life.

Jim is right, and just for the heck of it, price out Campagnolo 10sp cassettes.
Neal, I personally don't use Campagnolo chains or cassettes, but my friend was interested in your used chain if you were going to toss it. He likes to run them down to the ground, and thought there was still a lot of life left in your chain.
The best value for me is the Ultegra 9sp steel cassettes which I can get for about the price of a Campagnolo10sp chain. I'm amazed on the durability of the Ultegra steel cassettes, they last a long time as does the Sram PC 59 chain for $12.00. -tom
