Hi, of course this question has been asked a million times before but here goes;
I'm running shimano 9 on my TT bike and have been given a nice record 10 speed chainset. The bottom bracket is 111mm square tapered and so this new chainset fits. Now as I use friction shifting, indexing is not an issue so I am wondering if with a shimano 9 chain, everything will work. The hub on my disc also takes shimano 10 so I could use a shimano 10 speed chain and cassette instead, with a shimano 10 chain of course.
Which combination would work best, if at all? Chain recommendation?

If you use a 10 cassette use a 10 chain. The 9 chain will work on the record crankset too if you use a 9 cassette.
Your bb axle is not up to spec though even if it fits the record. Record 10 cranksets require you to fit a 102mm axle for optimum chainline and Q factor.

thanks, I suspected that the BB would be the issue.

The shimano compatible square taper BB is not the same as for ISO Campy compatible. Whereas they both have a 2-degree taper angle, the size of the square is slightly different. Yes the Campy chainset will go onto the shimano BB, but it will not seat properly. There will be those on here who say they have used such cross mixes, but since Record is spec'd for 102 mm, you should get a different BB anyway. Now that Campy integrated BBs are out, you can get the older type for pretty good prices. You want a record or chorus 102mm symmetric BB. Good luck.

thats great, thanks guys, in fact, I've just located a very cheap chorus 102mm BB.
