The 2nd ball and cone wore out and got repacked with marine grease, new compulsive ball bearings. Then we waited for a winter sale. Nashbar obliged giving away cartridge BB and touring deore 105 chainrings. Like silk it works. The LBS always complemented my BB wrenching when I was out of earshot so ...
Question is does a deore cartridge BB need extra protection from dirt and grit, water and dog excrement? Off course the factory, a responsible group, did not include a rubber sandwiched between the crank and BB nor a rubber from BB ring to spindle but that's not to say cartridge longevity would not improve with an "extra" seal.
Cartridge BB are on the market for how long now? I don't know but the rear triangle I use for a wheel stand is a suntour BB. Overall, are the cartridges better off with a rubber boot as an extra necessity than not? Does the LBS experience a trickle of cartridge BB coming in frozen or chewed up from dirt? Is that a dirt bike useage or do road bikes also suffer from infiltration?
What I have in stock are the deore rear axle-hub boots now surplus with installation in a 130?mm rear spacing.

your deore [mtb] bb will work great for road. seals just fine as is.

as long as he uses a Deore/MTB crank as the splines on the 'ES' series of shimano BBs are different than road splines on all but XTR.

but square taper is the same for both. and if he's using a crank that takes a cup-n-cone bb, it's square taper.
i decided while jogging to install the deore axle boots after repacking the deore rear hub after 1 1/2? year despite no radial play then I thought "golly geee, the BB cartridge grease may evap and spill out way before the dirt does it in." positive compulsive overkill or elimination of negative probabilities?

overkill. just another place for crud to accumulate since it's not a proper fit.

right! that was a prior possibility before chopping the first surplus deore axle boot but the boot material is conical and of superb quality, merc plus, so the fit for the first adaptation to another use as a seal was perfect and perfect over time with scheduled lub with FL wax/teflon. eyeball it. can the boot be bought? it has a number.

if you want to do the science experiment, go ahead - and report your results! my experience with these bb's is that they're superb on their own and don't need "help".
yes beyond expectations. i bought deore on gordon's recommendation via print. on opening the mo boxes and holding the unit i was frankly stunned by quality. the packing material is worthy of examination! a 'worthwhile experience in itself just holding the equipment to examine. but the deore line's performance over several thousands miles and years is outasite. however, in this case the design situation may incline more toward eliminating BB/spindle/crankarm seals from potential vulnerability and then consumer dissatisfaction than from a total lack of need to keep dirt out for the purposes of longevity. Or the elimination of terminal crunchiness on the way down to hearst's castle. certainly not in the driveway. looks like a thin maybe metric fender washer would go against the crankarm faced by a thick uss flat washer to hold the seal edge. the BB side can be trimmed to just compression fit inside that opening. i did that with the now component tossed cone/ball/taper and wobble when the superb seals worn to the now we can butcher it threshold and it'll break: which it did of old age.

don't buy that b.s. about seals not working. some "seals" don't seal - and that's their design spec. this is common in cheap "bike specific" sealed bearings for wheels - to reduce drag which gets some people all uptight. /real/ industrial quality sealed bearings, with drag, seal just fine. because their design spec is for the seal lip[s] to actually seal! shimano cartridge bb bearings are properly sealed.
