I just purchased a new treadmill since the old one finally crapped out. It's a proform 542 and is ifit.com ready. One of the options is counting carbs during your workout. My question is: how are carbs calulated while working out? I assume it's a formula based on calories burnt. I've read the manual cover to cover and there's nothing on carbs even though there's a big sticker on the machine calling it the Pro-Form Carb Counter(lol). I can speak with tech support to find out, but I figured I would put the question out here first.

Sounds like a marketing scam, but as you know a treadmill is a great piece of equipment for staying fit.

Are you saying there no-way to calulate carbs during a workout? The treadmill give me a readout as I'm walking. Example: My wifes workout last night the treadmill said 405 kcal, 37 carbs, 2.5 miles and is based on a 185lbs person. You divide your weight by 185, then muliply by kcal on treadmill to get actually kcal's burnt which would be 459.7 kcal.

Exercise equipment often has inflated counts for calories burned, though. I've read that walking one mile (or running one mile) should burn approximately 100 calories for an average person.

I don't know what the formula is, but in the beginning of a workout, you would be burning more carbs for energy than fat. After an hour or more, the majority of the energy would be coming from fat. Also, your speed would affect the ratio, as well as your body mass would affect # of calories expended. I suppose that with everyone being concerned about carbs these days, it is playing on that marketing theme. Tom 210/180/180

It can't be done. All the machine can offer is a carb number *equivalent* to the calories burned. And even the calories burned is a guess. Variables include your weight, speed, duration of exercise, fitness, etc.

You'd have to get a metabolic cart study done that in part, measures your breathing to determine your caloric needs and breakdown to optimize breathing. I could get this done for free at work if I'd ever work during the week, but I stay home M-F and work Sa-Sun.

I meant to say for optimal body function. The caloric consumption just by breathing varies by how well your lungs work etc. Emphysema patients expend tremenduous amounts of calories just to breath enough to only feel like they are smothering. That comes later. HTH Lori
